Devs: “Episode 8”September 16, 2020 at 1:28 am #1203709462The Black Lives Matter sentiment that manifested strongly in nominations has not manifested in the winners thus far at all. One category that I am keeping an eye on tonight is contemporary hairstyling. Guild-winning Big Little Lies was snubbed, so the race is wide open with none of the nominees ever having won an American industry award for hair. And then we have black-ish with “Hair Day” as one of the nominees.
This is also one to watch because Schitt’s Creek could win, having won for its hair at the Canadian Screen Awards for the first time this year. With that precursor, the open field and it being on the path to a series award, this award is gettable. If we see it lose to something like Grace and Frankie or The Handmaid’s Tale, it might not be strong enough to sweep.
I have switched from Picard to The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel for makeup after how basic the winners from the last two night have been, so I now have The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel predicted for two categories, but it is not a lock for either. I low-key wonder if passion for the show evaporated in 2020 and we could see it suffer a historic shutout or at least a fall like The Handmaid’s Tale suffered after sweeping.
Drama editing is obviously a biggie. Succession can win, but Succession is also pretty soft in the techs. Should be hard to win editing while you are snubbed in cinematography and sound. Name recognition seems to matter somewhat during the nominations phase with editors, but not at all when it comes to the winners phase. This was demonstrated by the first-time nominee behind “The Race Card” winning over an entire field of editors with awards histories. So that would give the nonwhite first-time nominee behind “Fire Pink” an edge over “Wartime”, but “Fire Pink” is also a terrible title. The editors did not know which episode “Hardhome” was, so I do not see why they would know “Fire Pink”. The category’s only single-nominated show, Stranger Things is right there, having won two seasons ago and being a tech-heavy steak-eater show that proved resilient this year. Ozark is at risk of vote-splitting, but if it is on the path to a series win, it kind of needs to win this because series winners often overcome vote-splitting in editing.
I have Watchmen for example, even though it is nominated three times. It is like last year with Chernobyl. There was no obvious choice between “Please Remain Calm” and “Open Wide, O Earth”, but I ultimately had to predict the show because there was not an alternative. It seemed like it actually would be placing first and second. I can see “This Extraordinary Being” being the one that gets predicted most, but I rank it third of the Watchmen options for two reasons. First, I do not think that the editors know which episode it is. Given the choice between the titles “It’s Summer and We’re Running Out of Ice”, we have seen both the Directors Guild and the costumer branch choose the former. And if the editors know which episode it is, that actually hurts it. Whenever it is just editors voting, we have consistently seen them respond disproportionately poorly to long takes, be it the ones in Birdman, Gravity or Roma. A win here would help its case in directing. Safe money might be on the pilot, but I am going with “A God Walks into Abar”, which is the episode in which a god walks into a bar, which was a better episode anyway, plus the editing was more instrumental to the storytelling. They passed over the American Crime Story pilot.
ReplyCopy URLSeptember 16, 2020 at 2:13 am #1203709507Riley, do you think Mrs. America is that weak that it can’t take advantage of a clear vote split scenario? We have seen shows like Crazy Ex Girlfriend and Master of None win editing due to vote splitting, why not Mrs. America too? I am very unsure about this prediction.
ReplyCopy URLSeptember 16, 2020 at 2:20 am #1203709515I do not see any passion for it. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend had passion. And I would contend that Watchmen is more in the editors’ wheelhouse than Veep anyway. It is tough though; El Camino has a chance too.

Totally agree with this. I can see Maisel end up being like The Handmaid’s Tale or I could see it do as well as it did last year because of the weaker field.
Same with Schitt’s Creek. To me it needs to win something other than Casting over these nights for me to predict it to sweep.
I can actually see a scenario where Schitt’s does what Maisel s1 did and sweep all but maybe one of the acting categories it’s nominated for + Writing + Directing whilst Maisel does what Atlanta s2 did and win only a small number of crafts but get shut out at the main ceremony.

Tales from the LoopSeptember 16, 2020 at 4:34 am #1203709579I’m considering Succession for Production Design and Picture Editing. What I find interesting here is the competition it’s facing. For Production Design, the competition is three-time consecutive winner The Handmaid’s Tale. For Picture Editing, 2017 winner Stranger Things is the only nominee that won’t be hurt by vote-splitting. Basically, you have this year’s Drama frontrunner facing competition from two fading shows.

Watchmen: “This Extraordinary Being”
BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY FOR A MULTI-CAMERA SERIES (was predicting Will and Grace because it’s on its final season but so is The Ranch so this will be an interesting one)
The Ranch: “It Ain’t My Fault” (Spoiler: Will and Grace)
BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY FOR A SINGLE-CAMERA SERIES (HALF-HOUR)
The Mandalorian: “The Reckoning” (Insecure‘s double nomination is a feat on its own but it’s vote splitting imo)
BEST CONTEMPORARY HAIRSTYLING
Black-ish: “Hair Day” (part of my argument for this one is narrative and also it’s baity episode name) (Spoiler: Schitt’s Creek)
BEST FANTASY/SCI-FI COSTUMES
Watchmen: “It’s Summer and We’re Running Out of Ice” (Spoiler: The Mandalorian)
BEST MULTI-CAMERA PICTURE EDITING FOR A COMEDY SERIES
Will & Grace: “We Love Lucy” (Spoiler: One Day at a Time)
BEST PERIOD COSTUMES
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel: “It’s Comedy or Cabbage” (Spoiler: The Crown) (this will be one of the key categories to tell us how Maisel love in the Academy is generally overall)
BEST PERIOD MAKEUP AND/OR CHARACTER MAKEUP (NON-PROSTHETIC)
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel: “It’s Comedy or Cabbage” (Spoiler: Picard)
BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN FOR A NARRATIVE CONTEMPORARY PROGRAM (ONE HOUR OR MORE)
