I was thinking of Kate Winslet as the first choice but as you said I don’t think she’ll take this up even if offered. So maybe Rachel Weisz or Keira Knightley (if they accept this lol).

I think Kiera would fit quite well, but I believe she said she would only work with female directors so the show would have to move on from people like Matt Shakman (or she could just bend her rule if they added a few more female directors).

Also, Jason Sudeikis is definitely getting nominated for SNL.

Have a great day if you see this!

Just couldn’t stop wondering who would be cast in S3 of The Great as Catherine The Great? Has to be an Actress in her 40s-50s who can mould into a historical setup. Who do you all think will be good nominees for the role?

Definitely Kate Winslet (Rachel Weisz as an alternative). And maybe Helen Mirren for S5-S6 (if it happens). I don’t think Keira Knightley to be suitable for this. I’ve never seen her in a role of a calculative/manipulated and highly internally conflicted person. If she had a film like The Lost Daughter or Little Children or Far From Heaven on her resume,I would have considered her.

It doesn’t help either that she most likely won’t appear in season 2 right? When was the last time a 1 season performance won a comedy acting emmy?

I can definitely see her popping up at least as guest.

Oh I agree lol I was just saying she’s not that old.

Are we to presume they go with someone with a relatively high profile here do you think?

    I think so
But i wouldn’t mind someone relatively undercover as well, as long as they’re talented.

I think so But i wouldn’t mind someone relatively undercover as well, as long as they’re talented.

My long list after the usual suspects listed above I’d think would be considered would be:

    • An Australian given his connections.
    • In ball park Brits that age that have come up at various (US) awards: Felicity Jones, Caitriona Balfe, Rebecca Ferguson, Kelly MacDonald awards
    • Anyone from Downton, Thrones or the Crown, for obvious reasons. I’d say this is a bit on the nose but if they went with Anderson they probably don’t care. (obviously within the right age group)
    • Emily Beecham could probably do this, and there’s the Cruella connection.
    • Anyone who is able to pull off Shakespearean comedies (more so than dramas) on stage given the tone

Who tonally out of that list could pull that off I’m not 100% sure and would need to think about.

Now we need to get them to block the supporting ladies of SNL…

Fanning and Mulligan don’t seem to have the necessary age difference. Going from Fanning, one needs a proper actress in her 40s-50s who is a generation above the two of them. Mulligan could play Fanning’s sister,so casting her as the next Catherine would be weird. Imagine how would it be if they went from Claire Foy to Emilia Clarke.
