Caught up on the end of Only Murders in The Building and now I get what people are saying re Amy Ryan for S2. I also thought Ryan finished the season very strong and would be a solid contender for supporting.

Great, solid season. A very worthy contender. Feels really broad appeal without being network-level formulaic, hard to do.

I think for the first time in a while we might be looking at Actor being a more competitive category than Actress.

Assuming The Flight Attendant and Dead to Me both miss eligibility and unless some of them tank in the winter awards or critically, Brosnahan, Fanning, Gomez, Lyonne, Rae and Smart sounds like a solid lineup.

Moreover on the Actor’s side, there’s Sudeikis and Hader as locks, Martin and Short as highly likely, and finally Hoult, who’s easily the most vulnerable here, and Glover, who should be a shoe-in on paper but I’m having doubts about, both because I feel like there’s not the overwhleming anticipation for Atlanta‘s return one would expect considering the cultural impact it had had while airing and also because the Academy already proved in the past they respect, moreso than love, the show – and I can see that sentiment translate into a snub.

It doesn’t help that right behind them there’s a couple of names that seem to have a subset of loyal and passionate voters and always feel like they’re on the verge of sneaking in if a contender is weak enough, like Anderson, Davis and Cheadle.

If there ends up being only 5 nominees who do you think has the biggest chance of getting snubbed between Sudeikis, Hader, Martin, Short, Glover and Hoult?

I really doubt there will only be 5 nominees this time round.

However to answer your question Sudeikis, Hader and Short are all safe IMO and considering how much the branch loves to nominate performers with creative control behind the scenes/auteurs for the first time I think Martin is in too. Short/Martin remind me of Jodie Comer/Sandra Oh. One of them delivers a showier fan favourite performance and the other is essentially the face of the show, delivers an acclaimed “more subdued” performance with lots of passion and it’s really hard to tick one of them offf without the other. That really leaves Glover and Hoult. If Hoult makes it in at SAG again with 5 slots and tough competition then I really would be surprised if he missed at the Emmys. But Glover’s show is airing in the spring.

It will really depend on the industry reaction to both The Great and Atlanta this time round. Right now the former feels like a show that’s rising whilst the latter feels like one that isn’t necessarily “falling” but more like one the industry has cooled off on.
