Julia always runs over 40 minutes, but it really belongs in comedy. It has some dramatic subplots and themes, but it’s overwhelmingly light, frothy, and fun. In terms of tone, I’d say it’s lighter than Maisel, which obviously also runs an hour. I’m pretty certain they already decided to submit in Comedy, too?

For the LA Times it may be, but afaik it will be classed as a comedy.

The BatmanMay 13, 2022 at 10:21 am #1204951092Despite the quality of the show being top notch, there’s going to be the typical Succession fatigue in a year or two if it wins the Drama Series Emmy again, especially with new shows airing. Every series that has won three times or more has faced that.
Succession will probably burn out somewhat critically if it gets much bigger than it is. If it becomes the show everyone has to review and cover because SEO it will get picked apart – it’ll probably become a political football and things like how underwritten the female actresses are outside of Snook will get picked up.

That list from critics had Julia listed in both the Drama and Comedy categories. HBO Max is submitting it as a Comedy.
Every series that has won three times or more has faced that.
And Succession has won Drama Series once…

ReplyCopy URLMay 13, 2022 at 11:24 am #1204951151The list of the critics is ridiculous and based on assumptions and tendencies… Brown and Watson are the only actors from This is us, however, they are very far from being the highlight of the season… Isaac in, but Chastain out for Scenes from a Marriage.. Because of what happened at SAG I guess… Giancarlo Esposito and Jonathan Banks for Saul when Michael Mando and Tony Dalton have been undoubtedly the stand outs this season, so far at least. Lame and lazy. TCA are the only awards from critics that actually matter and take TV seriously.
ReplyCopy URLMay 13, 2022 at 12:06 pm #1204951185Tony Dalton has only been in two episodes this season so far. Mando in only 3. And Banks and Esposito are the previous nominees. That was one of the least absurd aspects of the list to me.
ReplyCopy URLMay 13, 2022 at 12:46 pm #1204951232After finishing Killing Eve S4 a couple of days ago, I can’t stop thinking how on earth someone could destroy a TV show that way, I know most shows drop their quality after a couple of season but KE was plain bad (I decided to rewatch the entire show before S4 and the drop was even more evident). Jodie, Sandra and Fiona were completely underused (their characters and Konstantin were simply wasted during 8 episodes) and should not be anywhere near Emmy nods, especially Oh and Shaw. The first 2 episodes were good material for Comer but the whole S4 plot was meh and that ending was queerbating at it’s worst.

well so many shows ran away from it for the ending.
runner-up was, like, ozark? which missed writing and had a fraction of the acting noms.

Yeah. It’s well on course for another one after pulling off the BIG FOUR sweep (PGA,DGA,SAG,WGA). It’s only a matter of time when the fatigue starts in despite the quality being top notch. The comparison is not that Succession has won three Series Emmys, it’s about the fatigue. A continued appreciation of a show is bound to make others go for newer “IT” shows if the quality of the competition is tough. And you’ll notice I wrote “in a year or two”, intending to mean that one or two big award seasons for Succession will be enough for people to start passing it over.
Except Game of Thrones
Well, the fatigue (not as much fatigue as “it should not win”) mainly dropped in for the final season where it had not much of a strong competition. The Handmaid’s Tale and The Crown took a year off and Succession/Ozark hadn’t blown up.
Succession will probably burn out somewhat critically if it gets much bigger than it is. If it becomes the show everyone has to review and cover because SEO it will get picked apart – it’ll probably become a political football and things like how underwritten the female actresses are outside of Snook will get picked up.
Yeah. And also this:
The Issue of “Reflecting Reality” in Succession
Succession suffers from a diversity problem that is bound to be called out at some point in an aggressive manner.

I think if the final season of Thrones had come out even three months later and went to 2020, there’s no way they’d have gotten that number of acting nominations. Clarke and Harington would likely have missed in the 2020 field, and at an absolute stretch they might have gotten in two supporting actresses and actors each, if that
