The article says, rules only allow 2 episodes to be nominated. So All the Bells Say + Too Much Birthday?

Didn’t Ted Lasso get three episodes in Directing last year?

Oh yeah, welp. It’s getting all 6 isn’t it.

I don’t think it’s getting all 6 but Mylod, Scafaria and Parekh are more than likely in.

As per a Variety article, HBO has revealed their submissions. For their major shows in drama, they are submitting:

    Euphoria
    – Stand Still Like the Hummingbird (Writing & Directing)

    Succession
    – All the Bells Say (Directing)
    – Too Much Birthday (Directing)
    – Lion in the Meadow (Directing)
    – What It Takes (Directing)
    – Retired Janitors of Idaho (Directing)
    – The Disruption (Directing)

How were their submissions in 2020 ? Did they submitted that much ?

I could see them getting 4 nominations easily, although I’m not sure this ever happened. Severance gets one, Ozark gets two and Squid Game gets one.

I think “All the Bells Say” is locked in. “The Disruption” and “Too Much Birthday” were beloved, and “What it Takes” is directed by the Emmy winner director from “Hunting”.

Yea, I don’t know what Variety is on about. I looked for anything regarding a rule like this and couldn’t see anything.

Ozark (A Hard Way to Go) – Jason Bateman
    Severance (TBD) – Ben Stiller
Squid Game (Red Light, Green Light) – Hwang Dong-hyuk
Succession (All the Bells Say) – Mark Mylod
Succession (Retired Janitors of Idaho) – Kevin Bray
Succession (Too Much Birthday) – Lorene Scafaria
Succession (What It Takes) – Andrij Parekh

The Disruption didn’t get a DGA nom tho, so logically it should be the least likely since the 5 other episodes got it.

They only submitted the two (and got them both nominated).

Cathy Yan should easily be getting nominated, especially over the likes of Parekh and Bray, but the fact she couldn’t get in at DGA, when Succession took all of the 5 slots, makes me think she’s a pipe dream.

I would be surprised if Succession gets more than 3 directing nominations. Neither Ted Lasso nor Watchmen did it in much weaker fields where they peaked during voting and ended up breaking Emmy nominations records so why would Succession when it obviously not in either situation? The DGA are much lazier when it comes to nominating shows (especially those from HBO) nominating multiple episodes from Game of Thrones, Homeland, Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad and Mad Men whilst the Emmys only nominated 1 or 2 in all but one case for each of those shows.

The Television Academy’s branch is overall much more discerning in nominations and unlike at the guild, where Succession was airing just before voting began and those directors’ biggest competitors were The Morning Show and The Handmaid’s Tale, it has now been 6 months since season 3 aired an in the interim episodes of shows like Ozark (directed by a previous directing winner) and Severance (whose direction is at the crux of its critical and industry acclaim) – to name a few – have aired. The show also probably wouldn’t have even gotten 5 nominations at DGA had Squid Game been eligible there.

FYC: Better Call Saul and The Good Fight in all categories including Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.

I don’t see Succession getting more than 3 because I think that’s overkill and I don’t think it’s ever happened? Not even heavyweights like The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Mad Men or GOT could do this.

    Ozark
    Squid Game
    Severance
    Succession x3

    Feels about right.

The Sopranos got four out of five nominations for writing twice, in 2001 and 2004, and I don’t think it was a unlimited ballot, so four out of seven or eight is definitely possible.
