Julia Louis Dreyfus winning 6! Three would have been enough. 6 is way too much even if your performance is top notch. It’s not as if other nominees didn’t give Emmy worthy performances. It’s difficult to admit but it’s tough criticizing Peter Dinklage for 4, Jim Parsons for 4, GOT for 4, Modern Family for 5, The Crown sweeping, Julia Garner possibly going 3/3, Schitt’s Creek sweeping when you have JLD winning 6 on the bounce. It’s lack of imagination from Emmy voters going for the safe choice for 6 years. Tracee Ellis Ross deserved one. Ellie Kemper deserved one. Lisa Kudrow. Amy Poehler. Pamela Adlon. Lily Tomlin. But instead you have the same performance winning again and again.

My only problem with Veep/Julia Louis Dreyfus awards run is that the supporting cast should have received more love. Anna Chlumsky, Matt Walsh, Timothy Simmons, Reid Scott and Sufe Bradshaw. Dan Bakkedahl in Guest

It was such an Emmy thing that the worst one was the only one who won something, and obviously only because they weren’t able to award him (or anyone) for Arrested Development

I think not many call out JLD is because unlike Peter, Jim, GoT or Modern Family – She was genuinely always one of the best of her category. The other repeated winners had far superior competitors as nominees.

I used to share this sentiments untill i finally watched Veep. Her performance kept getting better and better with each season, hitting new climatic peaks each season. The only problem I had is that she did not win for season 7, her best season in what had been a series of career highs.

I am actually happy that she won only 6. Had she won all the 7, she would have been claimed as overrated by a lot of people. Winning 6, one short of a clean sweep makes her ‘perfectly rated’ in many books.

Variety: First Letterman, then Stewart, and now Oliver. “SNL” doesn’t have a worthy competitor/successor yet as an alternative choice, like a “MADtv” or something. It’ll continue to happen until that time comes.

Reality: Almost there with “Drag Race,” but then I think about all the years that Emmys snubbed the series outright at its peak, which sort of levels out the current autopilotness. I’m perfectly fine with RuPaul slaying in Reality Host year after year (though last year I would have opted for the “Top Chef” trio of hosts instead to win).

I am surprised to see the Modern family mentions. The show was the Succession of the time. A show which families watched together. It’s the last comedy I remember bringing families together. The cast is loved and Succession is going the same route as Modern family.  Modern family was very popular and gave good quality content for years. You can see how it influenced so many shows like Fleabag with the breaking of the fourth wall. It had support from everywhere writers directors actors producers editors. I do get the disconnect with the ages here however. Ask an average voter of the defining comedy of the last 15 years and Modern family is the answer. Julia was good enough for all of her wins. Nobody does comedy better than her. Not one of her wins was undeserved.

Yeah it feels like sacrilege to say on these forums, but I agree. I mostly like JLD’s performance on Veep, but Kudrow and Poehler deserved their flowers. I don’t love Tony Hale being the only supporting win for Veep either.

FYC: "What We Do in the Shadows" and "Severance" in everything, Natasha Rothwell ("Insecure"), Sophie Thatcher ("Yellowjackets"), Renee Elise Goldsberry ("Girls5eva"), James Caverly, ("Only Murders in the Building")

Black-ish did not need 4 series noms, and 12 acting noms between Ellis Ross and Anderson, year after year after year. It was a bit of a cruel joke, a lazy choice and 100% filler/guilt.

Bill Hader and Barry in everything (2 babka)
The Great - Elle Fanning, Nicholas Hoult and comedy writing and directing

Severance in drama series, writing, Adam Scott for best actor, Ben Stiller for drama directing, and the whole cast in supporting.

Sure I kinda understand this sentiment and I would say this too if one of the wins are undeserved. But what makes me slightly disagree with you is the fact that she’s basically always have been the best performer out of the nominees in every single year. I loved Lisa Kudrow in The Comeback and it’s hands down one of the best comedic performances in the last decade, but personally it’s just not better than JLD’s performance especially in S4.

    FYC in all categories:
    - What We Do in the Shadows
    - Maid
    - Station Eleven

Kudrow gave one of the all time great performances (comedic or dramatic, of any medium) but damn it’s hard to argue against JLD and “Mother”.

Kudrow actually lost to JLD’s Election Night. Season 4 was arguably JLD’s weakest year in terms of overall work, but once again she had a killer submission. She always had one hell of a submission!

The difference between these cases and JLD’s is that she actually was the most deserving contender in each field she competed in.
