Is anyone else watching Generation on HBO Max? It’s similar to Euphoria, but to me feels a little more realistic and definitely more optimistic than that show.

I think Justice Smith is amazing as Chester and playing a character unlike anything I’ve seen him play before. Could he follow in Zendaya’s footsteps and at least score an Emmy nomination?

    Thoughts on the show?

I find it awful. Makes me appreciate Euphoria more.

I actually think this show is pretty darn good. The comparisons to Euphoria are low-key useless and annoying because it’s not just in the same register, but I think I like the general ensemble a lot more than I did in Euphoria. You have some really funny parts (Naomi and Arianna) and some really nuanced, delicate ones (Riley and Greta) or both (Chester). I find Justice Smith grating as hell but also pretty darn good! That’s the thing about this show. The Lena Dunham of it all actually works—a lot of stuff is cringe, but since that’s the point, it totally works.

I don’t think Euphoria is anything like that. Euphoria’s cringey comparison is 13 Reasons Why—both shows take themselves very, very, very seriously. Generation doesn’t take itself that seriously.

I wish there was a happy middle though. Neither Euphoria nor Generation can touch Skins in both how funny & complex it was. Damn I really wish Skins could be renewed.

Dunno about awards chances, but yeah, maybe Justice Smith? Zendaya was a shocker, so it’s more a question of “can it really happen again?” Problem is, I’m not sure Justice Smith is the best of the cast? I think Haley Sanchez (Greta) is the best of the ensemble. Really striking and beautiful performance. I don’t know if Zendaya ever managed to be out-shined even by Hunter Schafer.

This strictly follows Euphoria and Industry in the sense it is propulsive not because of its story but due to its depiction of sex, drugs and parties. I don’t plan to finish it.

it really doesn’t have much sex, drugs OR parties. Greta, Naomi, Nathan, maybe Arianna (?) are virgins, their aren’t any raucous parties except a veryyyyyy chill one in the first episode, and there aren’t many drugs either. And none of these things actually gives license for the non-virgin, drug-addled characters to pretend to be better, it’s actually a shockingly non-judgmental show in that regard.

Haven’t seen the show but came across this TikTok and I’ve been replaying it for the past 5 minutes.

Sometimes it’s the simplest things that are the most effective.

The show is a bit jarring at first and it takes its time to find its footing but once you get used to its tone, outlandish characters and weird quirks, it becomes very enjoyable.

I wish Justice Smith was a serious contender for Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series at this year’s Emmys because he is utterly fantastic as Chester. He’s tapping into a side of himself he never had the opportunity to express before on screen and the amount of confidence and vulnerability  he’s able to bring to his character at the same time is impressive.

Please give this gem a chance. I hope it gets renewed for a season 2.

I basically watch for Justice Smith and Martha Plimpton. The episode without Chester just dragged. The show has improved but I still find most of kids annoying . Hbomax should give it another seasons but it seems viewing is low Bc Justice on twitter was begging people to watch

Finished this the other day. Honestly I love it. It definitely feels more of an honest portrayal of teen sexuality than Euphoria does (and better overall). Some parts are exaggerated but that’s because it’s a comedy too, which honestly Euphoria should’ve been because as a drama with its overdone and incredibly unrealistic scenarios just takes itself too seriously 💀 I would say the pregnancy is probably the most far fetched thing about Generation but that’s where the comedy bit comes in. OMG, I just finished this recently as well!! I love this show so much and am unabashedly obsessed with it. Sure, it’s very much out there quite often, but that’s what I love about it. Justice ate this thing up, and I need his and Uly’s characters to get together ASAP. #sorrynotsorry

Ugh I’m so sad, I really fell in love with it. I needed to know what happened at the end. Meanwhile Euphoria and Gossip Girl are supposed to be our “diverse”/LGBTQ+ representative shows on HBO despite both being trash with problematic tellings.
