The biggest question here for me is why Selena Gomez is so high in the odds when she wasn’t even nominated last year for a stronger contending season of Only Murders in the Building? I guess if the HFPA want to attract some press and she’s willing to attend their ceremony they could nominate her but it confuses me as to why she’s a near lock in the odds when almost everyone agrees that this season of Only Murders in the Building is going into the awards cycle with less steam even if how season 2 fares compared to 1 awards wise still remains to be seen. At least with Brosnahan (who I’m not currently predicting) I can understand because they’ve given her 2 wins for Maisel and she’s an easy name-check if they can’t think of other options and Applegate (who I’m currently predicting) has a lot more individual buzz this year than she had for season 2.
With regards to Cuoco, whilst I don’t have her in, I’ve been considering her really since the Emmys because I think there’s something to say about someone still managing to get nominated in a competitive field when their show more or less otherwise collapses in support and their network is hardly mounting a big campaign for them. Most people who saw the second season of The Flight Attendant seem to have taken to Cuoco’s performance in some form and the word of mouth around her work feels strong enough that if you haven’t seen it you’ve probably only heard good things about her. SAG is a different story of course with Smart, Ralph, Brunson, James, Applegate, Brosnahan, Cardellini etc all in contention but at least with the Globes I think that could be enough because what I find striking about the contenders thrown around in the category is how unclear it is where they actually stand. If we’re going off of buzz and novelty it makes sense for the Globes to nominate Sarah Lancashire and Jenna Ortega. The latter is arguably the breakout star of 2022 in the biggest hit of the year whilst the former is very well known in the UK, playing Julia Child and has a narrative of her performance not having been recognised by any major awards body yet. But neither is a guaranteed thing in spite of the novelty, buzz and passion behind them. I’m content predicting the latter to get nominated whilst I unfortunately don’t have the former but I think all Cuoco needs to leapfrog contenders like both of them and Brosnahan and Applegate is for them to just fall short as I imagine if we’re just going on starting off positions alone she would probably be 3rd. Of course one can argue that The Flight Attendant only did as well as it did at the winter awards and guilds because of the weak competition but it was still up against shows like Dead to Me, The Great, What We Do in the Shadows, Insecure and Curb Your Enthusiasm when it performed better than they all did before it landed 9 nominations at the Emmys. Maybe just like how it ended up repeating its guild performance for its first season at the Emmys it now repeats its Emmy performance for the second season at the guilds and Cuoco holds on?
FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.
December 8, 2022 at 6:42 am #1205182943As a Selena fan I am obviously bias and would love for her to perform well this awards season, but the thing I think gives Selena some advantage at the Globes is that her documentary which was a critical and commercial success was released right at the start of voting which ultimately gives her an advantage to some of the people you just mentioned. Also, since the song accompanying the documentary will obviously be voted on, HFPA members might reward Selena a nom for OMITB as a substitute for Best Original Song. This is also a slight stretch, but there are now some HFPA members who are HCA voters who gave Selena the win for Best Actress in a Comedy, Streaming. I know some of these are a stretch and her being so high up is slightly disconcerting, but in terms of her other competition, besides Jenna, she’s had significant visibility at the right time of voting. Something which some of her other contenders don’t have.
FYC: Only Murders in the Building and The Handmaid’s Tale in all categories including Selena Gomez, Steve Martin, Martin Short, Elisabeth Moss, and Yvonne Strahovski.

Arguably more – votes closed quite early which doesn’t necessarily allow Jenna to run on post-release hype
I will say I think Selena is a bit more likely in year 2 (depending on their overall enthusiasm for Only Murders).
What is clearly now a three-season or more commitment is likely to help her be taken a bit more seriously as someone committing to the acting side of her career.
I think she’s also likely to benefit from more international voters (as is OMITB) because, three years in to the decade, it’s one of the few comedies that has garnered ongoing global reach as opposed to domestic.
A lot of the frontrunners in this category are very domestic especially compared to the stuff that was around in the 2010s.
December 8, 2022 at 7:27 am #1205182988I agree that she’s had visibility and that might help her but also, since they are being broadcast again next year I’m sure they’d really want her there. I think they didn’t nominate her for S1 because they didn’t really see her worthy (even though she should have been) and this time around, another season has come out, she has received more praise for her performance, there seems to be more love for her and a third one is confirmed so I think they might understand she is really taking this seriously and is not just a vanity project. The show is also very global and we are talking about the Golden Globes

December 8, 2022 at 7:59 am #1205183016Pretty good choice, honestly. Much better than all the same white comedians and talk show hosts.
December 8, 2022 at 8:25 am #1205183030The show is also very global and we are talking about the Golden Globes
Yep. I can’t stress this enough. There is a big issue with comedies travelling in the last few years. At least one of Gomez or Ortega – as well reviewed Latino leads in two of the best travelling comedies of the 2020s – should be a no-brainer here.
If the only diversity in their comedy nominees is Abbott (a very, very domestic hit) despite all their added non HFPA voters based overseas, that is probably a red flag.

I guess here’s where I stand in my predictions. I wouldn’t say I’m at all confident in them but I’m also too exhausted at this point from the whole predicting game to be bothered to drastically change them.

I am scrambling to find POC nominees in a lot of categories. Oh was just Emmy nominated and that category is open. I don’t really expect it to happen I just didn’t feel good about predicting any of the others either so thought I may as well go random ha

It’s such a dead category. They should never have split them up. Like Daisy Edgar Jones is in the predictions center top 5. That’s how dead it is.

I quite agree, i don’t know why Limited gets a sole category for Supporting. SPECIALLY this year.

December 8, 2022 at 1:10 pm #1205183756Honestly, I don´t care about the CC and Satellite Award nominations, but it was interesting that they didn´t care about The White Lotus. People will say that show came late, but there are nominations in the CC from people of shows that came late, for example: Fleishman is in Trouble (Claire Danes), Welcome to Chippendales (Murray Bartlet).
