My man Ethan getting in GG, SAG, TCA, Gothams, winning a Peabody and getting left out at the Emmys.
    I will never forgive them.

I wonder what’s their criteria for “indie”. I mean, they’ve nominated Smart, Hawke, Squid Game, The Queen’s Gambit, however they snubbed Kate Winslet?

They also nominated Blindspotting and It’s A Sin, but their leads were snubbed.

Fun fact: Like the Spirits, they nominated Small Axe for series and snubbed the actors.

It’s not like Anya Taylor-Joy or Jean Smart is an underdog and yet they are here. They just snubbed Kate.

I think that makes sense. If you look at the nominee list, you’ll notice that all shows are “unexpectedly successful shows”. An HBO drama starring an Oscar winner is never an unexpected success. Besides, Gotham have a habit of snubbing shows with Oscar winners like Fosse/Verdon,Big Little Lies and Mrs. America, so Mare and Winslet snubs make sense. Watchmen is an exception to this rule as I think the fact it was so culturally relevant and a big step for representation at the time allowed it in. When you have an Oscar winner as the producer of a big prestige drama starring her, I don’t think you can call it an independent project.

There is no excuse for Winslet’s snub seeing as Coolidge and Taylor-Joy from popular series made the cut. Maybe they didn’t like her performance, maybe they didn’t want to nominate her because they know she’s gonna win enough awards for this part (though the same could be said for Smart, who did snag the nom). IDK. But, like, the panel that voted on this consists of, what, <10 people? The snub does not mean anything, especially in regard to Winslet’s chances elsewhere (which I know no one necessarily suggested — thankfully). Yay for Thuso Mbedu, who better win something for this role.

I think Luca and hopelesstar explained the system here perfectly.

These juries (whether BAFTA, Gotham etc) don’t vote based on who is an Oscar winner and who isn’t. Anthony Hopkins made it in at the BAFTAs with the jury last year and he was a then 1 time and now 2 time Oscar winner. Olivia Colman and Joaquin Phoenix are both very recent Oscar winning thespians and they still made it into a combined category of 10 performances this year. Being an Oscar winner doesn’t give you any advantage here but juries don’t snub people purely because they’re so established. They don’t go out of their way to “appreciate underdogs”. They just vote for the performances they take passion in. They might not have taken towards Mare of Easttown and that’s fine! It will still get nominated everywhere else and perhaps win some things at the winter awards too.

Gillian Anderson just missed at the BAFTAs with a nominating jury and I’m sure we can all agree Helena Bonham Carter (who made it in) isn’t any less established than she is.

And the juries were different foe different categories which explains why Anya Taylor-Joy was nominated but not The Queen’s Gambit.

Both juries have TASTE for nominating TGLB and Ethan Hawke

I’m so glad Small Axe got into series here but I’m fed up of the actors being done dirty. Shaun Parkes, Malachi Kirby and more delivered some of the best performances of the year yet they’ve been screwed over by every awards body sans BAFTA. Disappointing honestly.
