Only two episodes and Hannah Einbinder already has her submission. Jean Smart was great too, but I’m sure she’ll have an even better submission in the next few episodes.

Yeah, Ep 2 will be a really strong submission for Hannah Einbinder.

The lesbian cruise episode feels like a classic in the making, as well as a go-to Emmy tape for Jean Smart if nothing better comes along for her (which I’m sure it will by the end of the season). The sing-a-along was a defining wow moment, and of course, the inevitable downturn when Deborah’s foot-in-the-mouth syndrome gets the best of her. Loved Laurie Metcalf in episode three. It’s like “Weed” has been a fixture of the series since the beginning, which is a sign of a great guest performer. Metcalf meshed with the ensemble beautifully. Submit the correct episode this time, Laurie lol! Ava’s redemption arc continues with the spreading her father’s ashes scenes, but her unearned petulance is still there to annoy many too. Loved the interactions between Deborah and Ava the most, particularly the nail-painting scene with the frank discussion about gender and sexuality. Deborah being nastier to Ava than usual was fun. As for Carl Clemons-Hopkins, it’s a no for me, dawg. They tried their best to elevate the material, but it’s clear that Marcus needs to be back with the ensemble. His standalone scenes were not where they needed to be. Hopefully that arc improves next week when Marcus is on the tour bus with the gang. Sad that there’s only eight episodes and half the season is already over, but regardless, bring on the final four!

I’m not usually into US comedy but this one really hooked me. Jean Smart  it’s just… a goddess, what a woman! Hannah Einbinder pulling her stand up abilities, she’s pretty natural, and of course these two have a captivating chemistry. Took me like two days to devour the whole first season, my fav eps was definitely the 5th and 6th. The second season remains good but the part about the UFC fight and Deborah plot there got me like wtf I just watched lol. I’m about to catch up this week episodes!

Laurie Metcalf was really funny as Weed. Pretty easy nom in Guest and I’d say she could be the frontrunner.

It’s amazing how bland and boring Marcus is but his mother/aunt are so hilarious together that I actually don’t mind his appearences, and I’m glad we got more of Mark Indelicato.

Is it confirmed Metcalf is in guest? Do we know the number of episodes she will appear in?

I don’t know how to feel about this season. There are a lot of parts that are fantastic like last season but others that seem kind of contrived. Trying to keep an open mind but so far I am not loving it as much as I did season one. Still good and the performances are fantastic. The writing just feels inconsistent or maybe even just lacking in the execution. Like I totally understood the point Ava made about Deborah not being gay or straight but an egomaniac but it didn’t play out as organically as maybe it could have, which makes it feel disingenuous.

I did like how Deborah, someone who has had an extremely successful career in a profession that is a boy club, and that not really making her the best feminist and how it makes you wonder if that is the byproduct of her being a comedian or how she actually feels. Probably somewhere in between. I did like the attempts they went for I am just not sold on the landing.

I don’t think anyone has anymore than six screeners so it’s a bit unclear. I’m pretty sure she’s only in 2 of the first 6 from what I’ve heard.

Interesting! I never know how to judge things where I like the attempt but the execution doesn’t quite land (I often try and wait until the end of the season, I think?). I have this opinion with The Morning Show (which I think frequently misses by a mile but I can see they’re trying for something)

I really think this season is fantastic. I love how they are really giving all the characters their moments. I think episode 3 might be better than 2 for Hannah to submit. Really liked the ashes storyline. Smart is knocking it out of the park…the cruise episode, OMG Lol

I agree I think episode 3 is the best Submission yet for Hannah Einbinder. I think that after the first four episodes that Hannah has had better material than Jean Smart, dont get me wrong they are both amazing but Smarts material just hasnt matched the first season material she was given but I’m sure that will change with more episodes still to come.

This season is entertaining, but it feels like a network sitcom with a touch of profanity thrown in. Deborah’s reactions to Ava’s various motivations feel scripted rather than organic. And Marcus seems to be in a different show from everyone else so far. It just doesn’t seem cohesive to this point, though it’s never boring. It’s OK, but it doesn’t touch Ted Lasso for quality in its sophomore year.

Susie Essman will guest-star in a major arc of the last two episodes of the season. These were the episodes not screened for critics.
