For the most part, yes, but I also think her performance being seen as an all-timer propelled the show into excelling elsewhere.

Fosse/Verdon got much better reviews than Hollywood. C’mon now…

There has always been a LARGE critical gap (with the exception of OJ) between RM’s anthologies in limited and the TV Academy’s reception to his shows. Are these reviews any more different than the ones he received for any number of his Limited Series shows? For perspective, AHS S1 (Murder House) debuted with a 62 on MC and was at the top of the Emmy nomination leaderboard alongside Mad Men with 17 nominations, yet Mad Men had a 77 on Metacritic; a 15 point gap. The following year Asylum got a 65 on MC, topped the nomination leaderboard with 17 nominations, edging out peak GoT S3 with 16 noms, that had a 90 on MC; a 25 point gap. So on and so forth. Even the negative reviews about Hollywood still bill it as crowd-pleasing, beautiful to look at, and the acting on par. The critics love to hate RM, wbk. But there is acknowledgment in the reviews that audiences will eat it up. The TV academy still rewards his shows with nominations regardless of what critics say.

Metacritic doesn’t update as the season goes on, does it? I think the overall opinion of Fosse/Verdon seemed to get better as it went, especially with those amazing performances. The same could be true of Hollywood, but I doubt this one is going to be as big as Fosse/Verdon.

It’ll probably be like how AHS: Freak Show performed at the Emmys. Also, reviews are singling out Dylan McDermott.

The following year Asylum got a 65 on MC

Didn’t know Asylum scored 60s on MC. It was probably the best of Ryan Murphy and one of the best seasons of the past decade!

That was a crime. Asylum deserved 100. It’s the best miniseries of the decade.
