At the beginning of the last decade we saw how Showtime, along with HBO and AMC, became a cable force to be reckoned with at the Emmys after receiving multiple Series nominations for Dexter, Homeland and Nurse Jackie and actually winning Drama Series in 2012. However nowadays it seems that Showtime is on life support in the Drama and Comedy categories at the Emmys. The network has failed to get Series nominations for some of its top shows like The Affair, Billions, House of Lies, Masters of Sex etc over the years whilst randomly getting performers like Don Cheadle, Alison Janney, Mandy Patinkin and Maura Tierney in.
I find it strange that the big a change can occur for a network’s Emmy chances so I wanted to know what happened? And why?

Wrong priorities on their Emmy campaign as to what their best series for the season, as subjective as it is. They could have gotten Kidding in Series, Writing, Directing for Gondry and Carrey would have been competitive for a win for its first season. Instead, they only focused their campaign on Escape at Dannermora. I couldn’t blame them though it has a high profile cast and crew but only if they had pushed Kidding then I’m pretty sure it could have gotten in. This year I hope they push On Becoming a God in Central Florida more. They will have the final season of Homeland so I would understand that they might wanna give it a farewell nod but it was the former who have gotten in Golden Globes and WGA backed with critical acclaim for most especially to Dunst performance.
ReplyCopy URLI think it’s partially because all of their shows since have been so small in the public discourse, I don’t think they’ve had haven’t had an outright populist hit since Homeland & Shameless.
Another aspect is I think in terms of Emmys respectability, they’ve kinda been replaced by FX. They managed to became a mini-Emmy player before Showtime did (acting wins for Chiklis, Braugher & Close, series nominee in Damages, above-the-line nominations for weird stuff like Rescue Me, Lucky Louie & Nip/Tuck).
This decade they’ve been responsible for huge critically hits like Justified & Americans, perfected the auteur dramedy (Louie, Atlanta, Better Things) & essentially revived the limited series genre (AHS & Fargo) to what it is now.

I guess I see Showtime as in a worse state because they haven’t had a series nomination in Drama since Homeland in 2016 and on the Comedy side since Nurse Jackie in 2010 whilst AMC has managed to get Better Call Saul into series for all its seasons (so far).
Although I agree AMC is in a bad state for a network that has won six Drama Series Emmys. Will be interesting to see if 61st Street can get any awards love and if Tosin Cole can become the second Doctor Who principal actor to ever score an above the line Emmy nomination (after Matt Smith).

Isn’t Killing Eve technically an AMC show?
ReplyCopy URLAMC is definitely in worse position than Showtime IMO considering it’s solely dependent on a single show for above the line noms. See the former getting zero noms at the main telecast in 2018 when BCS was ineligible. For the last four years, except BCS, they haven’t had a major nomination for any of their other shows.
At least Showtime manages major nominations for multiple shows across various categories, usually getting more than those received by AMC. Showtime also got into Limited Series the last two years so there’s that. Saul is at the end of its run so AMC is really in danger if things don’t change.

Showtime might have a visibility issue. They don’t have ONE big water cooler show that everyone HAS to watch and talk about. Like someone else said, their shows have become too niche.
Homeland and Shameless use to be shows like this, but they kind of faded in their later seasons and are both ending now. The days of Dexter and Weeds have been long gone.
On Becoming a God in Central Florida and Kidding both deserve to be in the Emmy conversation this year, but I fear not enough people/voters have seen them. Idk if this is a marketing issue on Showtime’s part.
Showtime needs to get a major movie star lead for their next big series and have it have more of a massive appeal.
ReplyCopy URLActually watch out for Kirsten Dunst. I know for a fact voters are watching On Becoming a God in Central Florida and they like it. I don’t know how many of them watch but those who do praise her. Don’t act surprised to see her getting nominated in July.
If the show was in Comedy her nomination wouldn’t be surprising but her cracking the top 6 in drama would be SHOCKING
