Most of the upcoming Showtime shows look very promising to me. The Good Lord Bird: Limited series based on the novel same name starring Ethan Hawke. Your Honor: Limited series starring Bryan Cranston Ripley: Series adaptation of The Talented Mr. Ripley novels written and directed by Steven Zaillian (The Irishman, Schindler’s List). Andrew Scott plays the titular role. First Ladies: Anthology series about first ladies. Viola Davis plays Michelle Obama in the first season. Halo: Series adaptation of the video games. The Comey Rule: Limited series starring Jeff Daniels, written and directed by Billy Ray (Captain Phillips).

Those are all Limited Series. What I meant when I said “Emmy fall from grace” was why haven’t they managed to break into Drama series since 2016 or Comedy since 2010.

Solidarity with the striking writers. Pay them the wages they are owed for bringing us the content we are all on here because of!

Their newer shows just seem to come and go without much buzz. They usually do pretty well at the Globes though, don’t they? Dunst would be a deserving nominee this year, but that drama placement completely messes with her chances (I also don’t agree with it).

Like someone else said, they need a big star or proven talent behind the camera to help catapult them back into the conversation on the drama and comedy side. They’ll probably always be fine when it comes to limited series because it’s less of a commitment for a lot of actors and the stories/characters are usually richer.

Their upcoming programs actually sound very promising.

    Drama:
    – Ripley (Andrew Scott’s star has risen immensely since Fleabag + based on a popular novel/movie that had awards success + Oscar winner writing and directing)
    – Rust (Jeff Daniels, Maura Tierney and Bill Camp starting + BAFTA winning director + Oscar nominated writer)
    – The President Is Missing – only a pilot (Janet McTeer, Ann Dowd, David Oyelowo starring + timely)

    Comedy:
    – The Auteur (Jude Law starring + Taika Waititi directing and writing)
    – Rita – only a pilot (Lena Headey starring + directed by Emmy winner/Oscar winner)
    – Big Deal – only a pilot (Vanessa Bayer and Molly Shannon starring + solid director + great premise)

    – Their award campaigning has not prioritized the right contenders

For example, they are not even bothering to submit Back to Life.

Showtime doesn’t justify its monthly cost. It is more expensive than Hulu and the cheapest Netflix plan but does not have the buzz as they do. Its not like Hulu is a huge player at the Emmys, but they do have a flagship series in THT, which consistently cleans up during award season and has lots of cultural discourse. They also have FX on Hulu, Little Fires, and Remy this year (I could be missing some others.) And they have day-after cable content and teen shows like Runaways and Love Victor which further justify their price point. Netflix is a behemoth.

Showtime’s flagship, Homeland, just ended. Their current flagship thus must be Billions, but nobody watches or cares about Billions.  I’ve had Showtime for over a year (if you are, or know a college student, it comes with Spotify and Hulu) and have only used it 2 times, neither of which were for original Showtime material.

    FYC Oscars 2022:
    Picture: Passing
    Actress: Ruth Negga, Tessa Thompson

Hulu also had Normal People this year, which I read somewhere was one of their big priorities.

A Negroni. Sbagliato. With Prosecco in it.

I miss the days of Showtime’s female dramedies. We really had it good with “The Big C,” “Tara” and “Nurse Jackie.”

I also wouldn’t say Allison Janney’s nominations for “Masters of Sex” were a fluke by any means. She deserved each nomination (and could have won each time).

Maura Tierney should have easily won over Maggie Smith in 2016.
