As everyone does when creating a new topic, I apologize if this has been discussed before (it’s just so hard to discern given the sheer number of them). But, anyway, in looking at the prospective nominees, I noted in the comedy topic how unfortunate it was that there were so many great contenders this year that will miss. This got me thinking about something: the optimal number of nominees in a category.
Though this is the TV side, I am going to mention the Oscars (Emmys and Oscars are related anyway, so I mean…). The system in place at the Oscars, I feel, is perfect; every category has five nominees, sans Picture, which has ten. This feels right. There are normally not more than five Oscar-worthy contenders in each respective category (not saying Oscar-worthy contenders don’t get snubbed, they do, but normally they don’t get snubbed for other Oscar-worthy contenders) except for Picture, which normally has at least five Oscar-worthy contenders, so, ten nominees makes sense.
But what is the perfect number for the Emmys? We don’t want the number to be too large, lest we nominate unexceptional stuff, but we don’t want the number to be too small, lest we snub something major. Is the answer 5 for all categories and 10 for all series, just like the Oscars? Maybe… but then again, I normally feel that the drama categories (especially Actress!) have more than 5 Emmy-worthy contenders. Given how many times they’ve changed the number of nominees since 2008 (going from 5 to 6 to 7 to 8), this seems like a good conversation to have.
For what it’s worth, I’d try the 5 and 10. But I’d like some discourse on the subject for more clarity.

February 18, 2022 at 12:27 am #1204807954Six is a fair number for every acting category (5 nominees for limited series lead actress has been a real problem in the past two years!!)
I would vote 6 also for the series category, with 8 ore more there are always some filler…
Made for TV movie should have no more than 3!!!

I don’t actually mind there being a sliding scale in the supporting acting categories though because television is more ensemble focused nowadays than ever and I think reducing those slot would actually make the problem those categories have with checking off certain contenders from series frontrunners worse.

February 18, 2022 at 1:03 am #1204807985My opinion on this will be a bit unpopular, but I think the Television Academy should adopt the same jury system as BAFTA and choose six contenders per category out of a longlist previously voted by the larger body. Just this year, excellent shows like Abbott Elementary, Midnight Mass, Yellowjackets or Station Eleven are on the verge of being snubbed because of the network they’re aired on or their genre, while shows with mixed/average reception get in because they’re conventional/viewership titans. The last two years, the shows that won ATL were practically all on HBO or Netflix. A jury system would allow the Academy to recognize the diversity of talent and genres.

Agree. If they are strong enough they should be able to compete.
I actually think they should match the Critic’s Choice and have 8 in each category as you can tell by the amount of people who got on via a 2% rule or tie at the Emmys that the bottom rungs are really close. Either that or make it five and super competitive.
