HBO sat on a renewal for Lovecraft for nearly a year before not renewing just a week after Emmy voting closed.

If they announced for decision not to renewed in, let’s say February, (similar to date Watchmen’s confirmation), how do you think it have faired competing in this year’s Limited Field?

Additionally, what do you think would’ve replaced it in the Drama categories?

    Zero above the line nominations.

In drama it benefitted from being HBO’s main priority in a field that, aside from the three returning series nominees, was barren. In limited it not only would have been up against stiff competition but it also wouldn’t be more of a campaign priority for HBO than say I May Destroy You or Mare of Easttown.

FYC: Better Call Saul and The Good Fight in all categories including Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.

I really doubt that it would have been a lower priority for HBO than The Undoing, and that still got Hugh Grant in. And Michael Kenneth Williams would have made it over Ramos, even with the overperformance of Hamilton. Ramos just doesn’t do much in Hamilton and Williams has gotten 3 nominations in the category since 2015.

“Lovecraft Country” would have probably taken the place for most of “The Underground Railroad”’s nods in Limited genre, with the likely exception of Barry Jenkins in directing. No acting nods for Majors, Smollett, or Vance, but sure, MKW knocks off one of the “Hamilton” guys, and maybe Ellis or Mosaku have even odds getting into supporting actress. Some common categories like casting, music composition, cinematography, special visual effects, sound editing, sound mixing, stunt performance, etc., could have been achieved in either genre distinction. HBO > Amazon Prime in that sense. There’s no reason why “LC” couldn’t have averaged at least 10 nods in limited, and that’s on the lower end. Misha Green could have taken away one of the writing nods from “WandaVision,” etc. Lots of possibilities there. “Perry Mason” feels like the #9 slot waiting to get into Drama Series. That’s the perfect kind of series to soak up up-for-grabs tech nods. It wouldn’t have managed five acting nominations though. Same two for Rhys and Lithgow, and then these lazy Emmy voters would have just nominated more people from “The Crown” and “The Handmaid’s Tale” instead.

The Undoing was a zeitgeisty David E. Kelley hit that broke viewing records for HBO and starred two of the biggest stars on the planet. It would have been a far bigger priority for HBO than Lovecraft Country.
