What if someone decided to remake the 1983 ABC miniseries “The Winds of War” and its 1988-89 sequel “War and Remembrance?”

Who should produce/stream? Who should direct? Who should play the main cast (seen below in the next post)?

I’ve seen War and Remembrance but not Winds of War. Was Ali McGraw really that bad in the first one? I read they’d only let the sequel be made if they recast that part. I think they were told they had to have one of three actresses (Jane Seymour being one of them) star in it or else the network wouldn’t fund it. I forget the other two. Natalie is kind of the linchpin that the second series revolves around. Some of it is really dull until they get to her storylines, usually at the end of each episode.

You’re correct that MacGraw’s performance was not well-received, but I haven’t heard about ABC refusing to fund the project unless the role was recast.

Nonetheless, “The Winds of War” did have a problem with casting people much older than their characters. They had a 66-year-old Robert Mitchum playing a character who should be in his 40s or 50s. They had 44-year-old Ali MacGraw, 41-year-old Ben Murphy, and 39-year-old Jan-Michael Vincent playing characters who should be in their 20s. And they had 79-year-old Ralph Bellamy playing a real-life person who was in his 50s during the events of the series.

Out of those five I mentioned, only Mitchum and Bellamy reprised their roles in “War and Remembrance.” And Mitchum was nearly replaced with James Coburn because he was ill during production.
