Indie Spirit Awards to add TV awards

Consider it television finally getting its due. Film Independent announced Tuesday that it would be expanding its awards slate for the 2021 Independent Spirit Awards, adding six categories recognizing TV and episodic work alongside its long-established film honors.

“The independent, diverse creators we’ve supported for decades now straddle the feature and episodic worlds,” Board Chair Mary Sweeney said in a statement. “Our mission supports and celebrates visual storytellers wherever they practice their craft. The addition of the TV Spirit Awards recognizes this expansion by celebrating diverse independent, creative voices across platforms.”

In many ways, the move has been a long time coming, with Film Independent introducing TV and episodic work in its year-round programs, including Education, Artist Development, as well as its screening program, Film Independent Presents.

New TV Awards:

· Best New Scripted Series

· Best New Non-Scripted or Documentary Series

· Best Male Performance in a Scripted Series

· Best Female Performance in a Scripted Series

· Best Ensemble Cast in a Scripted Series

I don’t think there are Ensemble nominations? I think they just outright annouce the winner, like the Robert Altman award:

BEST ENSEMBLE CAST IN A NEW SCRIPTED SERIES
All series submitted for Best New Scripted Series are automatically considered for Best Ensemble Cast.
One (1) series will be awarded Best Ensemble Cast at the discretion of the Nominating Committee.

One of the biggest known merits of Schitt’s Creek is how well they tell the story and themes that they do with an extremely tiny budget. So, I can basically see them sweeping here for any category they are eligible for (Emmys part 2!).

Schitt’s Creek is not eligible for this at all tho?

A new series is defined as having all or part of its first season broadcast within the eligibility
period of January 1, 2020 – December 31, 2020.

Or I’m just understanding it wrong?

Oh, the budget part was just a speculation on my part.

Gotham awards nominated for instance Chernobyl and I doubt it was that low-budget lol.

Interesting news. I’ll look forward to seeing what they choose the first time, and what the criteria are for these awards. For the Ensemble award, they need to clarify what shows are eligible. The link implies that both new and old ensembles are eligible. I’m also curious if a monetary budget limit will be a consideration here, since that’s a sticking point of sorts with the film awards.
