Opens with 84 on metacritic. Premieres June 6 on HBO.
Synopsis: Disillusioned American actress Mira (Alicia Vikander) comes to France to film a remake of the French silent film classic, “Les Vampires.” She begins to find it difficult to separate herself from the character she plays in this eight-episode limited series based on 1996 film of the same name from Olivier Assayas.

I love the poster.
Do we know if they mostly just saw the first few episodes at Cannes?

I believe the first 4 episodes have been sent to television critics and 3 were screened at Cannes.

The “making of” approach was really interesting to me, but I have no prior experience with the film version of “Irma Vep” nor the silent film that it riffs off of. There’s a great deal of exposition that tries to bridge that gap for viewers, so I guess that helps. Olivier Assayas getting to revisit his original entity almost thirty years later in longform is wild, like if one day Spielberg decided to do the television version of “E.T.” or “Catch Me If You Can.” The meat of the series seems to kick in midway judging by the critics’ previews, which sounds like a slog with eight episodes. HBO placed this in its Monday death slot again the week of new Emmy eligibility, which instantly tells me there’s little confidence in its long-range success. They didn’t know what excellence they had on their hands doing the same shit to “I May Destroy You,” so having that series not only find its audience organically and persevere fifteen months to Emmy wins wasn’t due to any favors from HBO as a top campaigning priority. It should have proudly headlined a fall/winter/spring Sunday night lineup, but anyways. Alicia Vikander wowed me with her dual roles in “The Green Knight” when I watched that back in April. I was like, “Have I missed the other Felicity Jones all this time?” The answer to that question is no lol, but she’s been gone long enough for me to be pleasantly surprised by her acting again, since I haven’t watched anything from her since the career pinnacle of “Ex Machina” and Oscar-winning nothingburger “The Danish Girl.” Vikander has the potential to wow again here, I think, but I’ll have to decide if I’m willing to take the journey for this many episodes.

June 7, 2022 at 4:40 pm #1204975383I will watch when I get home. I loved the idea of Irma Vep (the original) but did not care much for the film/series.
ReplyCopy URLJune 8, 2022 at 6:22 am #1204975827Kind of wild how the first limited series of the 2022-23 television cycle already has a higher metacritic score than every single limited series of the 2021-22 cycle.

I really thought you were kidding.

Yeah. Ouch. I know we don’t put too much weight in to linear but it’s hard to not look at that and the type of program it is and go…
They’re pretty bad at promoting some of those Monday spots. I remember being really unimpressed with The Gilded Age promo – it got better, but it took a while.
