Jodie deserved a chance to do the role with good writing. A real shame.

Very exciting if the rumour mill is proven right on this one. Wainwright develops her characters well (haven’t seen Gentleman Jack though).

    Oscars FYC:
"THE POWER OF THE DOG" – IN ALL CATEGORIES
"SPENCER" – In all categories especially Director (Pablo Larrain) and Actress (Kristen Stewart)
"SHIVA BABY" – in all categories especially Picture, Adapted Screenplay, Score
"TOGETHER" – Actress (Sharon Horgan), Actor (James McAvoy), Original Screenplay
"LAST NIGHT IN SOHO" – Director (Edgar Wright), S. Actress (Anya Taylor-Joy/Diana Rigg), Cinematography, Costume Design and Production Design
    "CODA" – in all categories

My only concern here would he she has less genre experience than Chibnall, but I love Wainwright.

Well I mean Russell T. Davies also had less genre experience.

    Yep. It’s not a dealbreaker.

remembers that Kate Winslet’s first show was a Russell T Davies show and decides she will be Doctor Mare which is completely and entirely probable.

I’m quite happy about Russell being back because those four seasons of Doctor Who he show ran were almost flawlessly written (and each of them are my favourite seasons of the show so take from that what you will). Not to mention his works in the past few years (Years and Years, A Very English Scandal, It’s a Sin) have all been excellent.

I do hope however that they’ll be continued representation on and behind the camera with this new era of Doctor Who because the lack of representation is perhaps my only criticism of RTD’s era of Doctor Who (although that was also more than a decade ago so I am hopeful because suffice to say the industry and really the world at large has changed a lot since then). I didn’t think Chibnall’s era of Doctor Who was great at all (I am so glad with Russell returning we’ll finally have the return of strong character arcs, he really develops his characters well!) but one silver lining during his reign was that there ultimately was more representation and to really go back on that would feel like a regression. No matter how much stronger the writing will be.

I agree, but I feel like Davies has shown this in his projects since enough to feel a great deal more confident (at least in front of, I’m not across the behind the scenes enough to comment). I’d be really sad if it regressed as well.

Probably not Kate Winslet haha but when there’s a change in show runner it always seems to be the performer who has worked with the show runner before who wins out in the end (Jodie Whittaker was in Broadchurch, Christopher Eccleston worked a lot with Russell T. Davies in the 90s and 00s, David Tennant was on Casanova).

The internet seems to be convinced Olly Alexander will be Dr. 14 and for understandable reasons (like Phoebe Waller-Bridge when she was being rumoured to play the doctor in 2017 he is the performer of the moment and I do think RTD has said he would like to see him as the doctor in the past) although I wonder if Ben Whishaw could end up being cast. He’s worked with RTD before (on A Very English Scandal) and he seems to be a seasoned enough actor but not necessarily a veteran. He’s well known enough for the ratings to be driven up but at the same time isn’t too famous that they wouldn’t even bother considering taking the job.

I am holding out hope though that they go really left-field here (like they did with Whittaker who no one was even considering even as Andrew Buchan was being considered!) and go for someone like T’Nia Miller.

T’Nia would be on my wish list here too. Such a Doctor-y vibe.

Whishaw also strikes me as pretty much in the zone of “famous enough to help ratings, not so famous he wouldn’t consider it”.

Wolfali mentioned that showrunners often work with actors they’ve previously worked with. Russell T. Davies was showrunner for Blink. Maybe he can persuade the actress who played Sally Sparrow to reprise her role for one episode….
