Set to debut March 31, Julia is inspired by Child’s extraordinary life and her long-running television series, The French Chef, which pioneered the popular cooking-show genre. Through Julia and her singular can-do spirit, the series explores an evolving time in American history: the emergence of public television as a new social institution, feminism and the women’s movement, the nature of celebrity and America’s cultural growth. At its heart, the series is a portrait of a loving marriage with an evolving and complicated power dynamic.
Starring Sarah Lancashire, David Hyde Pierce, Bebe Neuwirth, Brittany Bradford, Fran Kranz and Fiona Glascott.

ReplyCopy URLMarch 1, 2022 at 11:18 am #1204826202Most of my hype for this show is just because of Lancashire who I consider to be one of the best actors working today but the show genuinely looks quite exciting. It looks like it might be very heartwarming.
Also as a fan of Frasier a mini reunion between David Hyde Pierce and Bebe Neuwirth excites me.

March 1, 2022 at 11:44 am #1204826226I was wondering why this was in comedy, but it’s giving Mrs. Maisel so I guess chile. I don’t know if I’ll give this a look, but I liked the lead. She devoured in Happy Valley!

ReplyCopy URLMarch 2, 2022 at 2:44 am #1204827423This looks good! The scene where she says “I’m a lady dad, just not your type” was so freaking good with her eyes showing her anger but being firm and steely in that scenario was great. This has great potential!

(Has anyone ever won Emmy,GG,CC, SAG and BAFTA for the same performance in the same season? PWB came close but ultimately lost BAFTA. Maybe Lancashire…)March 2, 2022 at 2:45 am #1204827425Love Lancashire. Nice to hear she hasn’t gone for a Streep-like take on Julia with the voice. Smart move when you’ve got to carry an entire series rather than a 2 hour film to soften that pitch.
Hope this propels Lancashire to Olivia Colman levels of acclaim.

March 2, 2022 at 4:50 am #1204827533I really like this trailer, and Lancashire looks great. I see why it’s in comedy now. A great actress who I’d be delighted to see get some US recognition.

March 31, 2022 at 12:09 pm #1204891684I’m not sure how I feel. On one hand, it’s hard not to get caught up by how charming and delicious it is, anchored by a fantastic performance by Sarah Lancashire, who has a huge Emmy clip already. It’s basically a comfort watch.
However, I think it was pretty obvious to me the whole time that this is a show written and directed by men. The writing is extremely self indulgent. It lacks the sensible eye that made The Marvelous Mrs Maisel work. One example is Julia trying to convince the producers to make her show by… Giving them a cake ? Another weird thing is the character Alice Naman, who is a fictional version of Ruth Lockwood, the original producer of The French Chief. Unless there’s some sort of registry about Lockwood being a black woman (there’s isn’t any kind of record about her at all, or any picture, which is weird), it’s a choice that just comes off as extremely problematic and exploitative, even though I’ve read there will be a storyline of her own to show her struggle in the “Mad Men” world. The show is trying too hard to control what the audience will think about it, too calculated, too by the numbers.
And the runtime. There’s absolutely no reason for it to be 48 minutes per episode. It just goes against the main notion of the show to focus on simplicity.
That said, it could definitely end up being an Emmy contender. It’s baity, it’s inoffensive, it’s nostalgic and the response overall hasn’t been as negative as mine.

Now that we're all talking about Sarah Lancashire, let me say it one more time, a little louder, for the people in the back:
WATCH. HAPPY. VALLEY.
