Great scene. Would love to see her nominated.
In retrospect the fact that this was in the top half dozen shows Netflix prioritised filming pre-vaccine makes an awful lot of sense. It’s so good.

If Julianne Nicholson can win for one scene, so can she.
Let’s push her.ReplyCopy URLFYC:
All things Succession, Severance, Ted Lasso, The Great and The White Lotus! Also, Colin Firth and Janelle James while you're at it.

Netflix retweeted these as well. She’s certainly in the hunt for a nom.

The build on that has been great because it was a bit slow the first few days. Just goes to show if something is good it often does deliver word of mouth wise.

mmm, i have never seen anyone outside of sites like this talk about either show at all.
ReplyCopy URLOctober 24, 2021 at 11:29 pm #1204537380Watched the last three episodes this weekend. Great and strong limited series and I am so happy with all the success Maid is having. It deserves all the love Queen Gambit received last emmy season.
I agree Anika is indeed amazing but I still think Andie Macdowell had a stronger performance. I think both Qualley and her mom can get a SAG nomination.
ReplyCopy URLOctober 25, 2021 at 8:31 am #1204537969I really tried to take my time with this one and let each episode stand on their own. I still finished in less than a week, but that’s pretty good by my old standards. I loved this. After the first episode, I could feel John Wells’ fingerprints all over this as it had a darker “Shameless” tone to it, but then the storyline lightened up (as much as it could given the downer stories being told here), but I think that is a testament to the humanity that was found in a story that could’ve been all despair and misery. That’s a testament to the writing, of course, but also definitely belongs to Margaret Qualley, who so confidently led this story and built a character whose motivations and purpose were never explicitly stated in the dialogue, but were always felt in her actions. The series has its fair share of twists, but the dramatic value was never cheapened by seeming to be a story told for the sake of being a television show. The rest of the ensemble really had their moments to shine. Anika Noni Rose was great in a character that was purposefully hard to read throughout the series. Andie MacDowell was definitely doing a lot, but once you got a better understanding of who this woman was, her antics didn’t seem out of place and weren’t too unbelievable for an otherwise grounded story. Nick Robinson, who has generally come across as harmless in other projects, was ultimately downright menacing by the end of the series, but also gave a nuanced look at how abusers can still be charismatic and create a false sense of comfort and safety. The last three episodes were so tense and beautifully layered, and although the ending made sense logically (and in retrospect, it kind of wouldn’t have made sense if the series ended any other way), I was still really emotional. I’m glad this is apparently a big hit for Netflix, and we don’t need to see any more seasons, but I have to admit that I would love to see where this story picks up years later because I’d love to revisit this world and these characters. At the very least, this should do for Qualley what another fall Netflix hit miniseries did for Anya Taylor-Joy.
ReplyCopy URLOctober 26, 2021 at 6:11 am #1204540113This was fantastic. I don’t know if there is really anything I can say about that hasn’t already been said by others on here (I’ll try to think of something!) but I think what I really liked about this show was how its cast and crew really sensitively handled its subject matter. Nothing felt too forced or inauthentic, Qualley and the writers really understood the character’s trauma, pain and heart knowing some days aren’t exactly like others emotionally for an abused single mother working full time cleaning people’s houses to provide for her daughter.
It’s through this heartfelt depiction that this show has become a big hit and I hope other streamers and networks really bear this show’s success in mind when they’re commissioning original contemporary set stories with not so much of a built in pedigree but lots of humanity. This is a perfect example of how television, and more specifically the miniseries format, should be utilised in this era of peak TV.
ReplyCopy URLNovember 18, 2021 at 10:53 am #1204586468Four episodes in and really loving this. The mix of a really grounded tone with the playful touches works really well. Qualley is absolutely sensational and keeps me holding back tears pretty much constantly. As far as the competition goes I ended up being ok with Impeachment but Paulson and Feldstein literally can’t hold a candle to this performance. McDowell is also great, Robinson solid too. My only qualm so far (and why I’m coming here four eps in) is the thanksgiving scene with Anika Noni Rose. For as grounded and nuanced as this show has been so far that scene and honestly her whole character is kind of very cliched and forced
A minor blemish so far, looking forward to finishing this up!
ReplyCopy URLNovember 18, 2021 at 7:49 pm #1204587537I cried my eyes out in the finale. I haven’t felt so attached to a series since ‘Normal People’. It truly felt like I went on a journey right there with her. It was so real and grounded. I’m obsessed.

- Abbott ElementaryNovember 23, 2021 at 7:54 am #1204597723Finished and this was great. Not perfect but very very good, with the writing and directing being very solid but the true standout being Qualley. She’s just magnificent, I don’t know what to say what hasn’t already been said, but its a masterful and heartbreaking performance. Also, Macdowell is phenomenal and in my opinion potentially threatening Jennifer Coolidge as next year’s supporting frontrunner. I don’t totally understand how people could prefer Anika Noni Rose, who I thought was very good but who’s arc was one of the weaker parts of the series to me. Robinson was quite good as well, and I wouldn’t even be surprised to see notices for Billy Burke depending on how this blows up.
But yeah, awards talk aside, I really enjoyed this and found it to be a really quick watch despite my earlier trepidations of this being a ten hour sad story, and I think that’s largely thanks to Qualley.
