Unlike many networks/platforms, the ratings of HBO shows aren’t necessarily linked with awards success. Succession isn’t among the most watched HBO shows. I May Destroy You had such a small audience. The Outsider and Perry Mason had high viewership. We know Mare of Easttown has buzz and it’s watched by industry. Having lower ratings than BLL, The Undoing and Small Objects won’t be a threat for its Emmys presence.

It’s the record of an HBO original on HBO Max, so basically it just means it did better than Perry Mason, Lovecraft Country etc. I mean you can’t seriously think it did better than GoT finale? 💀

Winslet in Mare > Kidman in BLL S1

    Absolutely this.

I’m also going to say this – Nicholson was brilliant in the final episode, but her powerhouse performance was really an episodic thing. Not that she wasn’t good all the way through, but Jean Smart created such a fascinating character throughout the show, that shouldn’t have worked the way it did (I mean sarcastic grandma is such a cliche). She was funny, heartbreaking and truly superb. So although yes, Nicholson did something remarkable in an outstanding episode with baity material, I feel like Smart is pretty underrated compared to her. Smart didn’t have many big scenes, but she absolutely nailed the spirit of a true supporting presence. Both would be deserving nominees/winners, though, and I’d also add Enid Graham to the list.

better or not just personal taste HBO Max outage mars Mare of Easttown ‘masterpiece’ finale ‘Mare Of Easttown’ Finale Hits Series Highs, Most-Watched Episode Ever On HBO Max Mare Of Easttown finale is HBO Max’s most-watched episode since launch, according to HBO Max

The headlines are misleading. “The final episode of Mare of Easttown limited series drew four million viewers over the holiday weekend across HBO and HBO Max, with nearly three million viewers Sunday night (all platforms), marking a series high for both linear and digital, according to HBO. The finale also set the record as the most watched episode of an Original Series on HBO Max during its first 24 hours of availability, besting the finales of recent hits The Undoing and The Flight Attendant over the same period of time.”

That’s 100 percent true. It’s about how the industry responds to the show. Otherwise, a show like Escape at Dannemora (Showtime) would never have made it in. I wrote the ratings because I thought Mare might have had many more viewers than those other ones, not because I thought its ratings would affect its awards success.

“Brad and Kate and the producers are all talking to see if they think there’s a place to go,” Bloys revealed to Variety. “I think we’ll hear from them in a couple of weeks if they think that it’s a story worth telling, and they’re excited by. I’m excited to hear and see what they have to say.”

Hun, all secrets will be unveiled after the Emmys, like a lot of them. I feel S2 will happen since Kate Winslet hasn’t signed any new project since Mare premiere and Lee doesn’t look like it’ll ever happen.

Lots of tea in that article! Not “Mare”-related, but this tidbit stood out:

Next year, Bloys said he’s bullish on the returns of “Barry,” “Euphoria,” the second seasons of “The Flight Attendant” and “Hacks,” as well as the premiere of “Peacemaker.” He also pointed to HBO Max’s upcoming “Julia,” based on the life of famed TV chef Julia Child. “Sarah Lancashire is playing Julia Child, and she’s coming for her Emmy, I’m telling you now,” Bloys said.

Mare season 2 is happening, and it’s been clear for a while, but I’m not sure how I feel about it. I would watch Kate Winslet in anything, but I think that Mare’s story is perfect the way it is, and the more I think about it, the more I believe that a second season would overdo it.

    “Sarah Lancashire

It was such a perfectly wrapped series. I mean the last minute was so moving. There is absolutely no need to do second season….just like Big Little Lies didn’t need to at all.
