Netflix just recently released a list of their most watched TV shows. I assume the overall numbers represent households. Here are the Top Ten.
    https://www.businessinsider.com/bridgerton-compared-to-other-netflix-top-original-shows-viewership-2021-1

    1. Bridgerton (82 million)
    2. The Witcher (76 million)
    3. Lupin (70 million)
    4. Sex/Life (67 million)
    4. Money Heist (67 million)
    4. Stranger Things (67 million)
    7. Tiger King (64 million)
    8. The Queen’s Gambit (62 million)
    9. Sweet Tooth (60 million)
    10. Emily In Paris (58 million)

Here is a list of the most watched shows in their first 28 days according to Market Watch.

When you have Emily in Paris and Bridgerton in th top 10, I don’t know what to say.

I keep an eye on this also in what goes up in IMDBPro/Parrot Analytics and this seems about right – but I also don’t think it tells the whole story, some of which you also see in other figures that have come out via Nielsen.

First of all this is global, which is fine, but in the context of an awards board possibly decontextualises it a bit, because shows are often quite uneven in terms of how much of a hit they are.

Secondly this only shows the first 28 days, and not every show follows that path. Stranger Things I suspect has very high rewatch rates, and many of their figures would suggest Lucifer has a very long tail.

I however think it shows that despite anyone’s protestations – Netflix can still create very big hits, and four of the top 10 ended up being Emmy nominees, so popularity matters here.

All those numbers come from Netflix who revealed yesterday. THR gave some analysis of them:

“Netflix previously touted Bridgerton as being viewed by 82 million member accounts (the company counts two minutes of watching as a view). Dividing 625 million hours of watch time by 82 million accounts equals about 7 hours and 37 minutes of viewing per account — nearly the entire 8 hour, 10 minute running time for the eight-episode season.

Similarly, The Witcher‘s 541 million hours of viewing spread across the 76 million member accounts who watched at least two minutes equates to about 7 hours and 7 minutes per account. The series’ first season has a run time of 7 hours and 58 minutes, again suggesting that a large number of subscribers stuck with the whole season. Stranger Things 3, meanwhile, had a higher average viewing time (8 hours, 41 minutes) than its full running time (7 hours, 29 minutes), based on 67 million member accounts consuming 582 million hours of the season. That implies some users completed the season and then rewatched some portion of it within four weeks.“

Yep, that checks out – you can see this with ST when you go and look at the rolling data 60 day data on Parrot and IMDB well past the 30 day mark. It never really drops that far down the rankings which indicates it’s kind of constantly being watched at a reasonably high level in off seasons.

I mean the majority of shows mentioned alongside it have had only a single season released so far so not much of a difference with limited series there.

Of course it makes the difference. Netflix always emphasized if a series is limited or not.

True, but high ratings for a first season don’t always translate to high ratings for a second.

That’s why. I’m just saying that it’s quiet impressive for a limited series to do well like TQG. If you think about the show, about chess one year before, no one expect the show to be a juggernaut, not even in the prediction list or the expectations for everyone involved.

Netflix also mentioned Squid Game could beat Bridgerton and become their most viewed show ever.

Oh, absolutely. Huge hit and huge impact.
