I was skeptical Mindy Kaling could make a comedy I would really like given her so-so record after The Office. To my surprise, Never Have I Ever, on top of being a watershed moment for South Asian representation in Hollywood, is also one of the great comedies of the year. The bait and switch from a gross-out teen comedy into a dramedy after a few episodes was executed well. The lead actress is still green, but she has an innate charm that made it an enjoyable binge.
As far as Emmys, it depends if Netflix can mount a campaign for voters to take it seriously compared to their other teen-oriented content. It’s been #1 in the US and many other countries for the past few days, it’s critically acclaimed, and Mindy Kaling has cache in the industry that could help.
I’d personally nominate:
Best Comedy Series
Reply
Supporting Actress (Poorna Jagannathan)
Guest Actress: (Niecy Nash)
Directing: “…felt super Indian” or “…said I’m sorry”
Writing: “…said I’m sorry”May 2, 2020 at 9:27 pm #1203459713I enjoyed it. Specially Bc main character wasn’t perfect.

Weird how they edited the flashbacks though as if we were watching the show weekly as opposed it bingeing it.

oh no, I hope this hint is regarding a certain space show and not a certain season two that premieres next week

ReplyCopy URLMay 3, 2020 at 6:14 am #1203460004Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and Poorna Jagannathan (especially in the finale) were great here. The latter would be extremely deserving of some awards recognition. There is still stuff the show can improve upon, like Devi’s relationship with her culture and religion. Nonetheless, it is very good and an easy binge. Hated the actress playing Fabiola though. She was quite bad.
The penultimate episode, ‘…Had to Be on My Best Behavior’ was their best episode probably (despite the rushed conclusion to Kamala’s storyline). It was funny, emotional and actually used the main character’s background in an efficient way. Should be submitted in both writing and directing. It should probably be Ramakrishnan’s submission as well.

I can certainly understand why it is a success as it caters to that teen Netflix crowd and has been #1 on their top ten for a few days now, but I never viewed the show has anything more than a light-hearted comedy with decent writing and performances. The best part about the show, as everyone has been saying, is Poorna Jagnnathan and I think she’s definitely establishing herself with her roles in big projects the past few years that this could help catapult her even further.

I really grew to like Ben, and even though the relationship between him and Devi towards the end of the season was utterly predictable, I still wanted it to happen. Poorna was season MVP for me. I’m not sure if it has been picked up for subsequent seasons yet but it obviously will be.

I have to agree about actress playing Fabiola. Also, she looks like she is 30. Way older than the other two. I believe she is 21 but she reads way older

Also Poorna Jagannathan would be such a deserving nominee in supporting actress.
This show could legit be a writing nominee though, so watch out.

On the whole, I liked the young cast of unknowns — this could be a serious contender in Casting. Poorna Jagnnathan was exceptional among the adults, particularly in the final few episodes where she had more meat to chew on.
I hope it gets a second season so that it has time to give a little more depth to the young characters (the gay one, the poor little rich boy, the mother-issue one, etc.). I never got a handle on the character of Paxton, either. He seemed more like a device than a person. But on the whole, it was very entertaining and explored a culture you rarely see in mainstream American entertainment. Shoutout to the brilliant randomness of John McEnroe too.
