(NOHO ARTS DISTRICT, Calif. – June 17, 2020) — The Television Academy today announced additional rules changes for the 72nd Emmy® Awards competition, including a restructuring of how nominees are selected in each category.
To align the nominations selection process across all awards categories and to allow for more inclusiveness in the recognition of excellence, the number of nominees per category will now be based on the number of submissions in each category. Emmy submissions for 2020 have increased by 15% over the previous competition year.
“The increase in submissions is a reflection of the number of new voices, new television platforms and a tremendous growth in content from existing platforms across our industry,” said Television Academy Chairman and CEO Frank Scherma. “Despite production suspension resulting from COVID-19, there is a wealth of excellent work submitted for this year’s competition.”
The number of nominations in a category will now be determined using the following criteria:
    • 1-19 submissions: A sliding scale between zero to 4 nominations
    • 20-80 submissions: 5 nominations
    • 81-160 submissions: 6 nominations
    • 161-240 submissions: 7 nominations
    • > 240 submissions: 8 nominations
Comedy and Drama Series categories will have eight nominations each, regardless of the number of submissions received. Paired performer categories (i.e., supporting actor comedy and supporting actress comedy) will have parity in the number of nominations.
Finally, this new rule eliminates the previous 2% rule, which specified that in categories with five nominees, if the fifth and sixth top vote-getters were within 2% of each other, both would be nominated.

I looked at an article Gold Derby published last year which said that there were 303 submissions for supporting actress in a drama and 372 for supporting actor in a drama. Does this mean, assuming this year’s submissions will be similar that we’ll see 8 performers nominated in each category since there will be more than 240 submissions?

Based on last year’s numbers, the comedy supporting races fell a bit short of 240 but the article from Variety about the new rules says that there’s been a 15% increase in submissions from last year to 2020 so we could see 8 performers nominated for the comedy supporting categories too!

    This is so exciting!

This is nutty and I hate it, but the 2% rule was also the worst, so getting rid of it is something.  Based on my interpretation of the above applied to last year’s numbers and then accounting for the 15% increase in submissions that is noted, we are looking at:

5 nominees: limited series, limited lead, movie, competition series, sketch series, talk series

6 nominees: comedy lead, drama lead, drama guest, limited supporting

    7 nominees: comedy guest

8 nominees: comedy series, comedy supporting, drama series, drama supporting

Are we going to be able to predict 8 supporting nominees then?

5 nominations for limited lead would be tragic.

    CRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAZY!

Now I put This Is Us and Modern Family back in race. Wooooow. I’m shocked. I honestly don’t know quite yet if this is the right or the wrong move, but is definitely super exciting!

It's about the chaotic editing in Moulin Rouge!

It seems like the category that this’ll end up screwing over is Limited Lead, as there’s always going to be fairly few of them since there are always less leads than supporting players, and without several seasons competing at a time, it seems very doubtful that we’ll end up seeing more than five a year.

I wonder if some studios will try to change strategy and change the categories of some performers after this.
