So, I’ve seen 7 episodes of S1 and have some thoughts:
The Good:
- Everything involving Julia Garner. She’s an absolute scene stealer, and I’m always waiting for her to appear. A shame her role is so limited.
- The show has some thrilling moments, and when they’re thrilling, they’re actually really good.
- It had a fairly decent pilot with an interesting style.
- The music is quite good.
The Not So Good:
- Jason Bateman is lacking emotional range, in my honest opinion. Maybe I’m missing something, but he practically has the same facial expression throughout the first season.
- It’s kind of all over the place; I feel like some storylines are completely irrelevant to the overall storyline. Maybe come the end of season 1 that changes.
- The episodes are way too long. They don’t need 55 minutes per episode, they really don’t.

They’re both phenomenal. And Bateman is good too, his role is just much more internal.
July 12, 2019 at 3:48 pm #1202972990Yeah, I don’t know why it gets so much hate here. I mean the pilot is trash, in my opinion; it really made me not want to watch the rest but a few episodes in, and it starts to get really good. Like everyone else said, it’s not made to be some cultural phenomenon, but it’s still riveting television with a phenomenal cast and direction. Bateman isn’t exactly challenged acting-wise because he usually plays middle-aged dads in trouble, but it’s still more serious and probably some of his best work. Linney and Garner are amazing, so is McTeer even if she is pretty one-note (the daughter’s good too). Honestly, I wouldn’t have minded if this won Ensemble at SAG.
“No user starts this shady” - someone culturally relevant.
Also got banned because...reasons? So, I guess ciao.

I’m so late to this show but I love it. Yeah, it starts slow but it’s worth seeing it through.

March 27, 2020 at 9:56 am #1203397076Have watched the first three episodes.. Laura Linney is coming for HER Emmy.
March 27, 2020 at 1:00 pm #1203397348The premiere is great. I can already tell this season is gonna be the best so far.

March 27, 2020 at 3:40 pm #1203397500I’m now four episodes in. Laura Linney is gonna be a MAJOR frontrunner in Drama Lead Actress. Not predicting her yet to win, but she’s gonna be on my top 3.

March 27, 2020 at 6:02 pm #1203397696I’ve finally watched the pilot of this show…and it was pretty bad. Its such faux prestige.
Is the show about the same or does it get better?March 27, 2020 at 6:30 pm #1203397711I’m starting season 3 tomorrow, so I can’t comment, but…anyone who knows Pelphry’s work with adequate material on GUIDING LIGHT, (where he’s already won 2 Emmys) will not be surprised that when handed top notch material & properly directed, he’s one of the best scene partners you could ask for. To pair him with Linney, who is a master at her craft, sounds fantastic. Can’t wait to watch!
March 27, 2020 at 9:09 pm #1203397777I’m going to start it now. By all accounts, it sounds like Linney is coming for the Emmy and Netflix have positioned her to be the freshest potential nominee in voters minds.
It’s going to be a crazy category. Far too many fantastic actors to chose from. I hate that HBO didn’t air BBL in May last year. Sure, it was a crowded field but any year going forward seems like it’s going to be. They did the cast dirty awards wise with that move since a years worth of television has passed by. Had they aired earlier last year, there’s no way Witherspoon and Kidman would have lost out on nominations. They’re too big. Even if they didnt have the performance, they’d still get in. Sad thing is, they both were excellent but too much time has passed for their roles on BLL to propel them to the top of the race where they should be (alongside Aniston IMO).
