September 14, 2020 at 11:58 pm #1203707477No co-written episodes this time, so they are going to have to choose who they want the Emmy (if they submit one episode again, which would be how they win).

I see a What We Do in the Shadows scenario in which they get multiple episodes nominated. I doubt it would win even with one submission, so I’d go with two or three.

I was genuinely surprised by how dramatic this season was and how well Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle were able to pull it off.
Also the younger cast really brought their a-game. Especially the actors playing Maura, Gabe, and Sam. Also, Mutsuko Erskine was wonderful as Maya’s mom (and her real-life mom). I loved that they made this season more of an ensemble show that just the two leads. It really elevated the show into greatness.“Opening Night” is by far my favorite episode of the entire show. Emmy-worthy, it deserves nominations directing, writing, and acting for Maya Erskine.

I just recently watched the first season after having never really gotten around to watching it when it first premiered and was definitely charmed by the show. This season is on a whole different level. Although I watched all seven episodes in one day, I had to take a break between each episode because there was so much to unpack and sit with. While this season is still laugh out loud funny, it also goes much deeper than season one, and honestly hits levels I never expected this show to reach. The way they dramatize the dizzying highs and lows of middle school is something I’ve really only ever seen successfully done before in the Bo Burnham film “Eighth Grade,” which I adore. “PEN15” season two meets that challenge. The intricate knowledge of middle school politics with the devastating personal insights of “real life” combines for the perfect balance of a great hangout show and a multi-layered portrayal of how awesome and awful it is to be a teenager. Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle are phenomenal in these roles. They have created such specific characters that never cease to make me laugh out loud and also deeply feel their pain. Although this season also gave other characters like Sam, Gabe, Maura, Maya’s mom and Anna’s mom a bit more to work with, it is undeniable that this is a vehicle driven entirely by Erskine and Konkle. Konkle wrote the best episode of the season, “Vendy Wiccany,” which touched some deep anxieties that I never expected to see on a TV show about growing up. Sam Zvibleman, given the chance to direct the entirety of Season 2A, clearly took the opportunity and ran with it because he completely stepped up to the plate and made some fascinating choices that elevated the entire season. There is no denying this is, at times, a deeply uncomfortable show, but it is so rewarding to sit in these moments, as well as the hilarity and cringe that has come to define “PEN15,” and watch Erskine, Konkle and Zvibleman do their masterful work.
