With the Oscars probably never recognizing voice acting performances (and most American animated movies dominated by live-action actors to begin with), which cartoon voice actors do you believe deserve (or deserved) to be recognized at the Emmys, by default the only top-tier awards body to recognize voice actors? Does not matter if it’s applicable to Primetime or Daytime.
Here’s some of mine (will definitely expand over time):
- Eden Sher (Star vs. The Forces of Evil)
- Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls)
- Dee Bradley Baker (Star Wars: The Clone Wars)
- James Arnold Taylor (Star Wars: The Clone Wars)
- Matt Lanter (Star Wars: The Clone Wars)
- Freddie Prinze, Jr. (Star Wars Rebels)
- Clancy Brown (SpongeBob SquarePants)
- Tony Anselmo (Legend of the Three Caballeros)
- Ashley Johnson (Infinity Train)
- Dante Basco (Avatar: The Last Airbender)
- Troy Baker (Amphibia)
- Anna Akana (Amphibia)
- Mae Whitman (The Owl House)
- John DiMaggio (Futurama)
- Katey Sagal (Futurama)
- Hynden Walch (Adventure Time)
- Josh Keaton (The Spectacular Spider-Man)

April 12, 2022 at 2:26 am #1204913989I don’t know if it’s an unpopular opinion but I feel like this category should become juried. Every year it feels like voters just don’t even watch these shows and just check off performers who they really like or who are really buzzy at the moment (Borstein winning in 2018, Rudolph repeating twice in a row…)

Yeah, it’s not to say some of those performers aren’t good but it’s definitely a category where it’s pretty clear people aren’t watching with any immediacy (I don’t necessarily think that’s true for voiceover). It’s also usually buzzy + older performance vs buzzy + new (Cuoco would have been a tremendous nominee here for Harley Quinn)
I’m going to plead ignorance here but is this voted on by all of the acting branch?
April 12, 2022 at 3:20 am #1204914021Maya Rudolph is genuinely fantastic on Big Mouth (“bubba bath” is iconic) but her only winning on her first nomination after 3 excellent seasons of being ignored, the same year she just happened to be double nominated in a live action acting category for two different shows, yeah it was a lazy namecheck. Which is sad because her work as Connie is probably my favourite performance of hers.
Nick Kroll never being nominated for big mouth either when he’s the co-creator and voiced 7 characters with uniquely distinctive voice work just proves this further.
Wouldn’t have minded if the never submitted Jordan Peele and Jean Smart got namecheck for their excellent work in Big Mouth either.
ReplyCopy URLApril 12, 2022 at 4:12 am #1204914092Need more time to think about it properly but off the top of my head, people whose work I adored and haven’t yet been nominated
Maria Banford as Tito Taylor Thomas the Anxiety Mosquito, Big Mouth
Glenn Close as Mona Simpson, The Simpsons
Kaley Cuoco as Harley Quinn, Harley Quinn
Mark Hamill as Joker, Batman: The Animated Series
Regina King as Huey and Riley Freeman, The Boondocks
Sandra Oh as Debbie Grayson, Invincible Trey Parker as PC Principal, South Park
Jordan Peele as Duke Ellington/singing voice of Freddie Mercury, Big Mouth
Michelle Pfieffer as Mindy Simmons, The Simpsons
JK Simmons as Nolan Grey, Invincible
Jean Smart as Depression Kitty, Big Mouth
Arleen Sorkin as Harley Quinn, Batman: The Animated Series
Tara Strong as Unikitty, Unikitty!
Meryl Streep as Jessica Lovejoy, The Simpsons
Alan Tudyk as Joker/Clayface, Harley Quinn
John Witherspoon as Robert Freeman, The Boondocks
Steven Yeun as Mark Grayson, InvincibleAnd it’s Live Action but it’s still an actual character, Kristen Bell is tremendous as the titular role in the Gossip Girl franchise. Should’ve won and received multiple nominations by now.

Yeah Kroll not being nominated here is a travesty.
I think I agree with Wolfali that maybe this should be juried.
April 12, 2022 at 7:13 am #1204914220The past season of Big Mouth, Thandie Newton over took Maya As fav voice on show. She deserves nomination
ReplyCopy URLApril 12, 2022 at 8:09 am #1204914270This thread is not for the category, specifically, but I THINK Ella Purnell has a chance for Arcane. She has individual buzz right now and for Yellowjackets, plays the most iconic character from the show and already won the Annie Award for Voice Over.

If they’re not paying attention here, they’ll probably ignore Arcane altogether, but I completely agree on Ella.

April 13, 2022 at 11:52 am #1204915720Honestly I do think Maya does deserve her past wins here as she is outstanding as Connie, and the first time she won it felt like an inspired choice after years of ignoring both the show, and Bojack Horseman before it (Will Arnett and Amy Sedaris should have been winning this award for years).
Watching the spin-off Human Resources, I need to throw Rosie Perez for the Ambition Gremlin in the ring here. What she does with her voice is SO GOOD even if she’s not in every episode. And David Thewlis as the Shame Wizard is just fantastic. But if Maya wins again, I won’t be mad.
