Set in 1980s San Diego, Physical is a dark comedy following Sheila Rubin (Rose Byrne) through her journey of self discovery via aerobics.

Gets better in the following episodes but I found myself more invested in the arc of Bunny instead of Shelia.

…being funny.

June 18, 2021 at 4:21 pm #1204307808I watched all three. The first episode was the worst one. Show does get better. But they need to get rid of the husband ASAP. He just bring everything down and to a halt . Also, less narration. This show reminds me of the central Florida Kristen Dunst show on Showtime.

June 23, 2021 at 6:30 am #1204314234It took me a while to get there but the following two episodes are indeed an improvement. Byrne gives a magnetic performance that outweigh’s the show’s quality in each of the three episodes but at the moment her work is the only positive outside of that of the show’s music supervisor lol for me.
Sheila’s husband is by far the weakest aspect of this show and unlike say Chris Elliot’s performance as “the irritating character” of Schitt’s Creek, Scovel’s performance here is quite frustratingly one-note. To say watching his character on screen is cringey would be using too much of a euphemism. The rest of the ensemble are fine but none of them have been particularly noteworthy. The character of Bunny has been singled out but I don’t know I had this weird vibe watching this actor’s performance that they saw Ozark and Julia Garner’s work and said “I’ll try that” lol.
The other “big” flaw this show has is that its plotting has been all over the place so far. The writers have thrown the kitchen sink in and the only thing that makes it feel like Sheila’s character is grounded in reality is the nuance in Byrne’s performance. Sheila’s later “transformation” that keeps being teased has intrigued me thus far but it will be how the show tries to put the pieces together over the next two episodes that determines how long I’ll keep watching this show.

June 23, 2021 at 8:13 am #1204314376Apple TV has been such a disappointment.. shows with great expectations that turn out to be so weak, and in some cases just bad, actually. Defending Jacob, The Morning Show and Ted Lasso are the only ones I truly enjoyed so far. Opened up for suggestions btw 🙂

But yeah I was waiting more from Mosquito Coast and Physical..

The Morning Show and For All Mankind as well.
Interesting how all of them didn’t start out great (or in some cases, even good) but ended up growing into themselves, curious if the same can happen for Physical by the end of S1 (or going into a potential S2).
