Britt Lower for Severance.May 20, 2022 at 9:19 pm #1204958751Thanks Helmetz for creating this annual thread again (one of my favourite parts of May!)
Forwardswill already mentioned what my first choice was going to be (The Other Two) so I’ll just go onto my second choice here:
Somebody Somewhere (“BFD”)
It’s just a show that feels so lived in and poetic from the very first page. In the space of seven half hour episodes you’re introduced to characters who are so well developed from the offset that you honestly feel like you’re spending actually time in these scenes with these characters. The show at its core is about a woman journeying through grief and a mid-life crisis and whilst that journey does receive some form of a spiritual conclusion at the end of the season, the way the show’s characters really navigate its heartfelt humour is really something special to watch. I could watch 40 episodes of Somebody Somewhere or I could just watch this season and drop it and honestly I would feel just as satisfied with both scenarios. A rare delight.

The writing in The Captain’s Wife (Ariel Karlin and Pat Regan) is a stand out.

Also, I know this is a sleeper, but check out Minx‘s pilot. Less artistic than Hacks but still very charming and fun.

You gave me a lot of great titles to watch, and I can definitely see a lot of possible nominees within your suggestions. Nominations voting begins on MONDAY June 16, so if you have any additional last-minute comedy script suggestions, please shoot them to me in the next day or two so that I can have a chance to review. Thank you so much, Derby-ites!
