I loved so much about “Escape From Shit Mountain”, but it really underscored that this is NOT a comedy series. It belongs in drama, award strategy aside. One of the characteristics of the comedy form is that it tends to have lower consequence for actions, and that is not the case here. It has nothing to do with the quality of the show or its elements, but this is a drama.

Absolute props to JGL and Stephanie Hsu for their work here, as well as the writing and directing. Goes in my top 3 of the series, along with “Dead Man’s Hand” and “The Night Shift”.

A lot of hints there. The whole ending sequence was clearly aimed at that. The character kept switching from evil monster who murdered two of her closest friends cold blooded and an innocent girl to someone who was being forced to do what she did. The conversation with Arthur at her house and the motive for her to sabotage the red light (because she didn’t want Lily to mess with the movie by keep pulling the light when she was feeling uncomfortable underwater ?) was embarassing to say the least. The show would better off with her just being an evil person and killing Lily for being jealous of Arthur or something like that. There’s also the fact that that footage stayed there for like 30 years and no one saw before her husband ? And how were the audience at the end supposed to recognize Laura and know what was going in if no one saw that video ?
In my opinion, that’s a problem with the show as a whole, though. Some of the motives for the crimes are just too cartoonish (I also mentioned this for the Metal episode), but that’s probably Rian Johnson’s intetion to pay a homage to classic detective stories. I can enjoy it to some extent, but some things I am not able to let it go.

Time of the Monkey and Future of the Sport did a better job at developing a grey motivation to the killers (or “killers”, in the case of the latter). Exit’s Stage Death also did a great job at crafting two psychopatic assholes without the need to give them a redemption arc.

Dead Man’s Hand made a whole lot of sense because Adam Brody’s character was supposed to be a dumb failure.

I am 100% sure Cherry Jones will get nominated for playing a version of herself again and that’s ok, she’s great in the episode, but I will be pretty mad if she gets in and Barkin and the girls from Time of the Monkey don’t.

Episode 9 was indeed the best yet. This is a very fun show. Wonderful guest stars every week and although it is ‘case-of-the-week’ the crimes haven’t felt too same-y yet.

Honestly had such a blast with this show! It’s pretty early I know, but I have a feeling that it’ll probably wind up still being one of my faves of 2023 when all is said and done.

I loved the finale – not to say it’s the best episode, but I certainly laughed the most and it was a nice respite from all the gloom and horror. That episode was comedy.

And yes, it sets up the next season perfectly. If that was Rhea Perlman’s voice, will we get her in the next season? fingers crossed!
