This was my favorite new comedy last year and it’s a shame that it didn’t get a Comedy Series nomination, however, the competition was understandably tough. I hope it can pull through this year and also attract more viewership. Ramy, Youssef, Ali and Abbas pull through!!

ReplyCopy URLJune 1, 2020 at 11:20 am #1203511855The first season was great, but I like the second season even more. It does what all great sophomore seasons do and expand more on the supporting cast and their world; the episodes that focused on Ramy’s family members were truly moving in their own unique ways. And then there’s Mahershala Ali, an actor who can do no wrong in my book. He brings such an incredible gravitas to his performance, making every line sing. I found his character complex and fascinating, both because the writing here is so strong and because Ali is such a nuanced performer. I can’t stress enough how great he is in this (and again, in everything).
ReplyCopy URLJune 1, 2020 at 2:22 pm #1203512065I didn’t necessarily likes this any more or less than season one. There were a lot of things I liked and disliked in season one that essentially repeated themselves in season two. I found myself really disliking the main character by the end of the season once again, and found some of the episodes focused on secondary characters to be alternatively good and unnecessary. What this season has going in its favor is the gravitas of an actor like Mahershala Ali taking on a substantial role. The depth he brings to this role is really needed to take Ramy’s journey seriously, and he has some standout moments that rival his two Oscar-winning performances if I’m honest. I also need to say that the show’s tone was all over the place this season and it didn’t always land when they tried to juggle the comedy and the drama. The end of the second episode is the darkest moment of the series, but it is followed up by a generally light-hearted affair. Dena’s episode never convinced me if I should be laughing or terrified. And how in the world am I supposed to feel about that Atlantic City episode and that excruciating fifteen minute awkward scene that serves as its centerpiece? These conflicting feelings really held me back from enjoying this season overall, though there were definitely good parts.

my favorite character is still the mom. Hiam Abbass plays her so well.June 23, 2020 at 4:18 am #1203547378The latest episode i’ve seen is Hiam Abbass’ episode. It was profound but hilarious and definitely my favorite one so far. She’s such a talent!
ReplyCopy URLJune 27, 2020 at 5:54 am #1203554411The season was great overall, on par with season 1. Ramy is quite a frustrating character. He needs to figure out what he wants because I don’t think he truly knows it yet. Mahershala Ali was such an amazing special guest and I hope he makes one or two guest appearances in the third season.
This is definitely one of the best shows of the year and deserves multiple Emmy nominations. Comedy Series, Writing (“They”), Directing ( “You Are Naked In Front Of Your Sheikh”), Actor (Youssef), Supporting Actress (Abbass), Supporting Actor (Ali) and Guest Actor (Omar Metwally).
ReplyCopy URLJuly 1, 2020 at 3:45 pm #1203561659I saw both seasons this past couple of weeks. I really liked the show, I think it has a pretty perfect cast, with standout performances from Hiam Abass (Oscar Nominee 2008 if you ask me), Ramy and of course, Mahershala Ali who was fantastic.
“My name is Maysa, my pronouns are she/her”. I can’t…
I agree though that the show has some serious problems with tone and how they group the episodes. I didn’t think it was necessary to have episodes for each of them during one single season, nor do I think they needed to be so close to each other. The show is about Ramy and during one very weird stretch, Ramy simply wasn’t there. I also think one episode they were discussing the wedding and talking about waiting and the next episode they were married.
But yeah, I liked it very much. I don’t think this and Dave will both get Emmy love, it’ll be either one or the other. I think both get writing, but I don’t know if there’s enough space for both to be in series and get acting nominations. Maybe that Globe gave this show an edge. Who knows.

Hopefully he gets Lindsay Lohan this time lol
ReplyCopy URLAugust 20, 2020 at 3:44 am #1203656264Watched the first season in two days and started the second season yesterday. Even if I am not considering it one of the best shows I watched recently, I am really rooting for Ramy Youssef to win Lead Actor though. He also wrote and directed some episodes, so maybe that will give him the boost to win that trophy.
