It’s actually a great show. Critics (59%) can suck it. At least the public score (82%) is pretty good, I’m happy that people love it.
ReplyCopy URLSeptember 19, 2020 at 5:11 am #1203717460As someone who has seen the Pilot and the second episode and a bit of the third I think the “is Wittrock bad stuff” is because of the Hitchcockean style they’ve gone with the show is a bit hit and miss. I found it ok (the style) and it doesn’t noticeably affect the performances of the actors or the concentration as a viewer on the story in the second episode. That being said I think it’s more of a case that the actors are elevating the work and not that they’re giving great performances because of the writing (which is messy in various ways one of which is pointed out by England). With regards to Wittrock his performance does get better but it’s kind of pale in comparison to Paulson and Nixon’s (both of whom I thought gave phenomenal performances).
I saw a bit of episode 3 and I maybe shouldn’t have because Brandon Flynn is TERRIBLE. It’s a shame it’s the case when Briones, Paulson, Nixon and Davis are great.

September 19, 2020 at 5:12 am #1203717462I really doubt an early release with bad reviews is gonna get into series. Netflix is likely gonna have other, better recieved projects to push instead.
Well The Politician got into Series at the Globes (which is what I was talking about not the Emmys).

September 19, 2020 at 5:25 am #1203717479This debuted at #1 in the US, Canada, the UK, Russia, Austria, Germany, Denmark, Belgium, Egypt, Finland, Greece, Ireland on Netflix top 10 charts. #2 in countries like France. Likely the #1 show worldwide yesterday. Already outpeaked Hollywood and The Politician.
Audience score is currently at 83% on RT.

And people online are going crazy for Nixon and Paulson.
I think Nixon is getting nominated.

I think this will help her get nominated for The Gilded Age if ready in time.
ReplyCopy URLSeptember 19, 2020 at 6:23 am #1203717506I actually think whilst it depends on the performance of Ratched at the Globes, Critics Choice and SAG that she’s getting nominated regardless. She will have greater buzz for both The Gilded Age and Ratched if the former comes in on time but she reminds me of Bette Midler in the sense that even the harshest of critics have praised her performance.
But yeah will be very interesting to see because this show could go anywhere from 3 to 15 nominations (in total of above and below the line) depending on the competition in the craft and acting categories. I do think it’s getting nominated for a few crafts regardless and that Paulson and Nixon have a shot at a nomination even if the field ends up being packed.
I lowkey wonder which show HBO is going to keep out of the eligibility window The Gilded Age, Euphoria or Succession next year because they’re rushing production on all three so either they’re delaying one of Euphoria, Succession or The Gilded Age or they’re not going to give two fucks about the Autumn/Summer shows at all and leave them in the bin like Years and Years and Mrs. Fletcher.

September 19, 2020 at 8:08 am #1203717652I’ve seen 3 episodes and I am LOVING it. This is exactly what I signed up for. There are tonal/visual/writing elements here that are simultaneously reminiscent of Asylum, Freak Show, Feud and Scream Queens. They marry together so well.
I tried not to get excited for this show because I didn’t want to be disappointed. ‘The Politicion’ just didn’t do it for me. I didn’t care about any of the characters or their motivations, but I can see the appeal of the show for those who did like it. ‘Hollywood” had every reason to be fantastic but the entire premise was about 5 entitled brats who got everything they ever wanted without putting the work in. They complained about how hard it was in show business- while walking around Hollywood studio lots, turning up at A list parties and having lunch with studio heads. I thought it was going to be like ‘Feud’ and was so disappointed by it. However, for people wanting a nice, easy watch with slick production values, it certainly did that.
I didnt want to get my hopes up for ‘Ratched’ but so far, no complaints. I’m surprised some users aren’t enjoying Englert. I think she’s great in the show! The entire lead ensemble are. Nixon, Briones, Davis, Wittrock are all delivering and (no surprise) Sarah Paulson is once again just fantastic.
ReplyCopy URLSeptember 19, 2020 at 11:28 am #1203717907Okay, final thoughts.
Ratched is exactly what I expected it to be. A campy show. However, it acknowledges that, and as Wolfali said, it doesn’t try to take itself seriously which was absolutely the right call. It definitely isn’t for everyone, but this is one of the best Ryan Murphy shows in a while. Miles better than Hollywood for sure.
I enjoyed most of the performances with a couple of exceptions but those didn’t ruin the show for me. Sarah Paulson and Cynthia Nixon were definitely my standouts. The production quality of the show is one of the best I’ve seen in a while. My least favorite aspect was the writing.
I didn’t like some of the choices that were made in the final episodes but I’m really excited to see where this goes next.

I’m a sucker for Ryan Murphy productions – with the exception of Scream Queens season 2, 9-1-1, The Assassination of Gianni Versace (which I thought was too confusing with the back and forward storyline) and some seasons of AHS (1984, Cult I’m looking at you) – so I think I’m going to love this.September 19, 2020 at 1:30 pm #1203718010Seen episode 3. It got much better than that cold open suggested it would be which I wasn’t expecting.
However has anyone felt like Sharon Stone has been a bit of a letdown? I think maybe her performance was too hyped up?
I see her happening at the Globes (even potentially over Nixon who whilst I know its early has officially become my favourite Supporting Actress performance of the season so far) simply because she’s Sharon Stone but I don’t see her happening anywhere else.

Hopefully her role isn’t like that later on.
The person who definitely has been wasted is Corey Stoll.

September 19, 2020 at 4:35 pm #1203718271Anyone believing Sophie Okonedo could get a nomination for guest actress? She had a pretty solid performance in episode 5
ReplyCopy URLSeptember 19, 2020 at 4:57 pm #1203718298I don’t see any mentions for Sharon Stone, here or in any other forums. Everyone is like Paulson and Nixon. I thought Stone was supposed to be the supporting actress standout? Is her role as thankless as I gather it is?
She appears in Episode 3. And basically been in her own world. That’s why more haven’t mentioned. I have only seen the first 4 so far.
