I forgot about the SAG win. You are both probably right. Maisel probably would’ve won.

    All logical arguments, but

I could’ve seen Barry possibly upset Maisel and it wouldn’t have shocked me. I feel like if Fleabag didn’t come out, people would’ve kept talking about Barry. Because people definitely were talking about Barry for quite a bit before Fleabag came out. Fleabag kind of stole Barry’s buzz in a way. I think Maisel would’ve won just because of that SAG win but Barry definitely would’ve won for directing. I still think Bill Hader was robbed of that award.

Vote splitting has been so frustrating in that category the past few years. First Teddy Perkins, then Ronny/Lilly

I don’t think Ronny/Lily lost because of vote splitting. It was like the “Battle of the Bastards” of Barry. It lost because of the momentum for Fleabag.

Probably, but I’m mindful of how many times Alec Berg has been nominated across multiple categories (although without a win).

I see Barry stans are still delusional a year later.

Fleabag didn’t deserve to win directing period.

Barry was the potential runner-up in both directing (consecutive DGA wins + considerably less of a vote-split than Maisel) and writing, got the most major nominations for a comedy that year, got its entire cast nominated, was the only comedy apart from Fleabag that was nominated in every category that is needed to win under the current system and won 2/4 major guild awards, DGA and WGA, both of which are stronger bellwethers for series than SAG.

It is absolutely within the realm of possibility that Barry was second for series. Regardless of our opinions, all things point toward a closer race between the two shows than some are willing to admit.

Fleabag didn’t deserve to win directing period.

It wasn’t as glaring as, say, if Schitts creek were to win directing this year.

Directing was another award seemingly given out for Fleabag as a whole, since Harry Bradbeer directed almost every episode across both seasons. It was never particularly showy work, but I liked what he did. And again, he probably won due to a sweep mentality so the actual episode didn’t matter

We gotta find something to do until the next season comes out.
