I am almost done with the show and will share some overall thoughts then, but while Lange did ham it up quite often, her performance was so much fun. I think she was hysterical in episode 7, to be honest.
ReplyCopy URLOctober 3, 2019 at 3:59 pm #1203119869This was a lot of fun. It was also a bit more serious than I expected it to be. My favorite moment was the “Unworthy of Your Love” performance, Ben is a great singer. The funniest has to be when Infinity’s boyfriend got shot by Dusty. That entire scene cracked me up. Ben Platt was outstanding in this in literally every single episode, I hope he wins the Globe and gets the Emmy nomination.
Edit: I also really liked Zoey Deutch in this.

ReplyCopy URLOctober 4, 2019 at 12:19 pm #1203121402This show is ridiculous and so much fun. This is what Scream Queens wanted to be but couldn’t. The tone was all over the place, and some storylines were random, pointless or shoehorned in, but I walked away from each episode genuinely entertained. I differ from many people in that I found The Voter the weakest episode and I enjoyed the two Assassination episodes (despite having no patience for the Infinity-Dusty saga), but I agree that the set up for next season is A+. Bring it on!
As far as the acting goes, Ben Platt was terrific and I’ve never liked Gwyneth Paltrow more (I had my doubts about her in the first episode because Georgina seemed like a Holly Holiday type of character and I hated Holly and Gwyneth as Holly). These two are the ones I’d like to see receive some recognition come awards season (also Bette Midler). It took me a long time to get used to how Zoey Deutch played Infinity’s childlike persona, but I liked her a lot in the dramatic scenes. Jessica Lange and Lucy Boynton were the weak links imo. Lange was too over the top and I’ve seen her deliver that exact performance a million times before, while Lucy wasn’t done any favors by 1) having the least interesting character and 2) having that character be the archetype that Emma Roberts has been playing in Murphy productions for years. That said, I’m still intrigued by what Astrid’s addition to Payton’s team would do, and I’m ALL for Bette Midler and Judith Light being the opponents of next season.

I love Ben Platt’s singing ( Who doesn’t ) especially that Vienna cover during the first minutes of the finale episode!

ReplyCopy URLOctober 6, 2019 at 7:01 am #1203123810Is it really going as comedy?
You cannot seriously think this is a Drama? It’s tonally campy and ridiculous, contains quips in every scene, has broadly archetypal characters and is blatantly satirical. It could not be more of a comedy. Like seriously, watch literally any of Jessica Lange’s scenes and tell me this is a drama.
ReplyCopy URLOctober 6, 2019 at 7:13 am #1203123812I rarely disagree with show placement at award bodies, but this one is a mixed bag. I don’t even know where I would put it in my personal awards.
My experience with this show is that it’s hard to take it serious. I get that it’s a satire, but I don’t see where it’s going. And I laughed only once during the first season. In comparison, I laugh out loud various times during a single episode of Succession.
