The news outlets will be busy praising the “landmark levels of diversity on the film side” that they’ll hardly pay any heed to lack of diversity on the Television side. For most,SAG coverage is mainly as a forerunner to the Oscars.

This. Remember the second of OscarsSoWhite and all the coverage of SAG to Elba’s deserved Beasts win despite 5/8 of the television awards going to non-white majority performers (Aduba, Davis, Elba, Latifah winning individual prizes and Orange S4 in ensemble).

    Oscars FYC:

"Lamb" – International Feature and all categories

"Summer of Soul" – Picture, Film Editing and Documentary Feature

“The Green Knight” – in all categories

Agreed. Interestingly though, I just had a look and on the film side I am only predicting four actors so hardly the normal levels of diversity we see from them. I also only have one POC-led ensemble getting nominated (King Richard). I will be curious to see what ends up happening.

And this is precisely why I always cringe when people say we’re finally getting back to a “good Oscar season” after last year’s “disaster.” As it stands right now, I honestly still think 2020/21 season >> 2021/22 season in terms of quality and the types of stories that are being told.

I think Sandra Oh, Omar Sy and if it’s a hit, Jaden Michael can happen here as well.

They *can* but none are sure things and that’s kind of my point. Right now I’m personally predicting Rae, Erivo and Sy to get nominated. But each of these are 4th or 5th and I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if they missed. Brown is the only POC sure bet. Meanwhile, there are about 17 white contenders that I would be shocked to see miss.

I dunno I thought last year had an abundance of solid films but few that were truly exemplary. As such, I can understand why people feel more optimistic for this season but I don’t quite share the same confidence yet, especially given the lack of diverse contenders. After all, Minari and One Night in Miami were both in my top 5 last year and I see nothing in any way comparable in this year’s set.

When Belfast is the Best Picture frontunner, what more can we say. There is a difference of a galaxy between the greatness of Nomadland and that of Belfast.

The directing and both lead acting lineups are all-timers.

I haven’t seen a single movie from this season yet, it just looks boring.
While last season i was head over heels over several, like Nomadland and Sound of Metal.

    It's all about Ethan Hawke!

I was personally rooting for PYW, The Father, Judas and Sound Of Metal.

I honestly think Sandra Oh is being overestimated here. She’s got incredibly stiff competition and the only times SAG have gone for a lone nom in either of the individual comedy or drama acting categories, the performer has either gotten in at the Emmys or their performance has been quite showy. Oh’s performance is comparatively restrained and The Chair came and then went in buzz as soon as Only Murders in the Building premiered.

    FYC:

"The Good Fight" and "The Other Two" in all categories.

I just realised that there’s a very real chance that Sterling K. Brown is the only non-white actor nominated at these this year. Will SAG be held to account if that happens or do we think it would get forgotten due to likely more diversity on the film side?

Some years have more POC performances that are recognised, others have less. The perennially outraged will always find a way to be offended though.

And every year lots of white performances are nominated. Differences in opportunity are not rocket science. If you were cognitively able to understand, you’d realise also it’s far more about respect and societal progression than it is about outrage.

Zzzz.. do you care about a lack of recognition for Asian/Latino performers etc or just Black performers? Because most people who preach on this topic are only concerned about Black performers, which isn’t actually promoting widespread diversity.
