Started strong then went downhill for me. Felt like Miles disappeared second half.

who ever didn’t cut that Bowen Yang sketch in weekend update should be fired. It just went on and on.

The season premiere started off strong but got very lost by the midpoint. It really showed all the flaws in the show namely the bad writing. The episode also showed that they pretty much only have one reliable white male impersonator in the cast, which was extremely noticeable in the game show sketch. It was also a particularly dude heavy episode where they leaned hard on Kenan and Bowen and Heidi and Ego were kind of shoved off in a ten-to-one sketch that seemed more like the writers attempting to make them fit the Kate-and-Aidy mold instead of letting them be themselves.

That being said the cold open, monologue and both pre-tapes were strong. Michael Longfellow had a good and funny debut Update piece and I liked what little we got to see of Devon Walker.

Much better premiere than I expected. The cold open addressed the elephant in the room with the mass cast departures and new cast in a fun meta sort of way. Miles Teller was a sturdy host who elevated a good deal of what he was given. Wish that Jon Hamm had been in some sketches too, or at least a digital short. Not much of a first impression on the newbies beyond the one on “Weekend Update” that I suspect will serve as a Pete Davidson stand-in moving forward. The Nicole Kidman AMC commercial spoof was spot-on. Chloe Fineman can take on that Kate McKinnon sweet spot mantle if/when given the opportunity. No Cecily Strong in the opening credits. I loved Bowen Yang’s lantern bug routine, though that looked like his recycled Daddy longlegs costume. The other corn-cob costume certainty was reused. Kendrick Lamar did what needed to be fucking done on “N95.” Welcome back, “SNL”! Fingers crossed for the “rebuilding season.” We’re all rooting for you!

The best moment of the entire episode was Colin’s line “Mostly thanks to this juicy bitch.”

Michael Longfellow made a good first impression; the other newbies made basically no first impression.

Cold open was pretty much what they had to do, but at least it was done well. The other skits were just OK … though that toilet paper bears sketch was up front but felt like something that should fill time in the last break.

Jack Harlow did alright, but Tom Hanks hosting would have been far better. I howled at the return of David S. Pumpkins! That might be the highlight of the season so far. Nice getting Bobby Moynihan back as Drunk Uncle too in a brief and biting Weekend Update. That was very unexpected! Loved the cold open. Welcome back, Cecily Strong! You’ve been dearly missed. She was a pitch-perfect Keri Lake. The Biden horror movie sketch was another good one. Harlow’s songs were both meh, but his natural charisma gets him far, maybe more than it should. He can easily be asked to host again in the future.
