Forgive me if there’s already a thread for this but I couldn’t find one!
The trailer came out a couple days ago for Octavia Spencer’s netflix miniseries Self Made:
Stars Spencer, Blair Underwood, Tiffany Haddish, and Carmen Ejogo
Call me biased (I’m a big Spencer fan) but I actually think this looks really good! I know the limited series categories are STACKED this year, but Spencer has proven herself to be an awards darling of late (3 Best Supporting Actress noms, PLUS producing a Best Picture winner all in under 10 years) so I think she should always be considered a threat, and she looks great in this. If it’s successful enough I could even see Haddish making it in too as her role looks pretty prominent, and maybe the Series as a whole. Plus Blair Underwood, with 2 golden globe noms and 1 critics choice nom all for TV is probably overdue for his first emmy nomination.
Anyone else looking forward to this?

ReplyCopy URLFebruary 26, 2020 at 4:02 am #1203360854It looks a bit too sappy and sweet to me. Almost more like a high-budget Lifetime movie than a serious look at the story of C.J. Walker. I’m not sure it’ll resonate with me, but maybe the actual show will turn out to be different.

ReplyCopy URLMarch 23, 2020 at 7:59 pm #1203392096I am almost done with episode 3 but man has this been a challenge to get through. There was no reason for this to be 4 episodes. This overall feels like a 90s Disney or Lifetime movie. I am really disappointed in this. Also….Tiffany Haddish as her daughter?

Well to be fair she had her when she was 14.
ReplyCopy URLMarch 23, 2020 at 8:16 pm #1203392111Octavia was terrific, her best performance to date. But that’s pretty much it. Tiffany was the worst part about all this. She needs to stay away from period pieces, it’s just not realistic

Yet Spencer looks like somebody’s mama.

Laughs. I think Tiff was miscast but the movie itself was so problematic that was the least of its problems.

Still a major casting error.
