I’m realizing I don’t know much about the HFPA, is it just a group of reporters? What gives them special insight into acting that they wouldn’t have into writing or directing?

This is perhaps a dismissive or wrong take, but I feel like with acting there is a higher proportion of the craft that can be judged based on someone’s emotional response to it, which doesn’t require someone to necessarily be an expert. Obviously how much a certain group weights that vs technical excellence differs, but one is neither right or wrong.

I don’t necessarily think press have any additional insight in to directing, and in terms of writing it’s more my opinion that short form writers tend to overstep the mark in offering their opinion on what works in a vastly different form they’ve never tackled.  Some writers obviously have broader experience, but my understanding is that’s not usually the case for the HFPA (if you read their profiles).

That explanation makes a lot of sense, thanks!

The overstep the mark comment I should point out I don’t think is unique to the HFPA, more people who write about/review TV in general. It is a constant bugbear of mine and I think most recently it is tending to manifest in extreme harshness or hot takes on anything that isn’t a first season, which is why we’re getting critics lists skewed wildly towards shows in their first and second seasons.

Yes, sure. But the reality of those category additions would probably result in awarding them in a pre-show situation off-camera, since NBC’s historically been strict about the three-hour runtime. I’m curious to see what’s going to be streamlined/removed from the broadcast Tuesday to accommodate these new supporting television categories, TBH. Ditching any unnecessary montages, overlong presenters banter, and/or cutting the intros to the 10 film nominees would surely do that (but let Jerrod Carmichael give his opening monologue for as long as he likes), though I’ve always enjoyed it when special presenters associated with the films did that, like I’d imagine Venus and Serena would have introduced “King Richard” if there had been a telecast last year lol. And they wouldn’t have to bother with episode submissions or anything like that either. They’d just nominate “the writing team of Abbott Elementary,” the directing team of The Crown, etc. That’s nothing complicated or outside of their capabilities, and it’s not like they’re anymore qualified to judge acting as they’re qualified to judge directing/writing as a bunch of questionable foreign entertainment “journalists.” They’re already doing it in film, and it’s not like they’re trying to go outside of their respective “lanes” to award Sound or Visual Effects. So yeah, I’d be all in.
