Plot: Mangrove tells the true story of Frank Crichlow, whose West Indian restaurant Mangrove, a lively community hub in London’s Notting Hill, attracted locals, activists, intellectuals and artists. In a time of blatant racial discrimination, Crichlow finds himself and his drug-free business the brunt of relentless police raids. In a bid to stop the discrimination and ruination of their community base, Frank and his friends take to the streets in peaceful protest in 1970, only to be met by police aggression. As a result, nine men and women, including Frank, leader of the British Black Panther movement Altheia Jones-LeCointe and activist Darcus Howe, are wrongly arrested and charged with incitement to riot and affray. A highly publicised trial ensues.

I quite liked this film. It kind of made Chicago 7 look like a college production. Every actor was on top of their game in this, McQueen’s direction was phenomenal and kind of had me on the edge of my seat, the music was psychologically disturbing. I mean what more is there to say?
I feel quite a personal connection to this story as its set near where I grew up and it was great to see that are being portrayed for the diversity that it has (it can sometimes be annoying watching a British show targeting American audiences showing that area of London to be a very white area when in reality it isn’t. It’s the same area the Grenfell Fire happened). What I really liked about this though was the cinematography and the direction of the protest scene. I remember reading an interview with Aaron Sorkin about Chicago 7 and how he was talking about protest scenes being filmed through the medium of film looked unrealistic and that’s why directors (including himself) are often tending to incorporate archive footage with the footage of their actors in a montage. It was quite satisfying to see McQueen get away without using archive footage whilst making the scene look quite realistic (and with little editing too).
I am intrigued by why Letitia Wright is competing in lead for this at the winter awards. She is quite clearly supporting and doesn’t appear until 15 minutes in (if I’m not mistaken) and is absent from key scenes. Nonetheless she deserves a nomination (potentially even a win although I haven’t decided on who I personally want to win that supporting category yet).
The only reason this doesn’t get an A+ for me is because whilst a lot of the crafts were phenomenal (if this was competing for Best Picture at the Oscars it would deserve to win) the hairstyling was really poorly executed.
For example this wig felt very false to me…

British productions are really destroying (the word choice wasn’t intentional) US productions this year. Coel, Piper/Prebble and now McQueen are delivering genuinely fresh, innovative work.

Short and slick is the way to do television.
this isn’t the place, nor am I prepared to argue about American vs British TV (I don’t feel qualified) but I will say I disagree wholeheartedly with this sentiment. While much of my favorite television recently has been small in length and episode count, much of the art of the television series lies in its ability to sustain itself over many seasons and episodes. The Netflix effect is leading to a shorter episode count across the landscape, which is a bummer, because the long running nature of television (4+ seasons) is what can make it particularly special.November 25, 2020 at 10:30 am #1203872321

I’m afraid I struggled with Lovers Rock (sorry Wolfali!). I admired it on a technical level but I guess I was expecting more of a plot.

That is totally understandable. I felt like that at the beginning of it to be fair.
I think what I liked about Lovers Rock (apart from McQueen’s direction) was how raw and realistic it felt. I felt like I was transported to this house party and it felt very adventurous in that regard.
I say that Mangrove feels more like a film and a heartbreaking and phenomenal story whilst Lovers Rock feels like you’ve been transported into a piece of art in a gallery.December 3, 2020 at 12:38 am #1203891093

All “episodes” are probably going to be top notch, and each is a full fledged movie, so it’ll be like Hunger Games when it comes to awards- they’ll cancel themselves out left and right. Nope. They all will be coming this cycle if I’m not mistaken.
Only Mangrove and Red, White and Blue are eligible for Movie (because of run time) but even then I fear they’ll cancel each other out (although whilst my review isn’t ready the one that deserves to win is easily Mangrove for me).
Wright needs to go supporting. She can easily win there whilst I don’t think she stands a chance at a nomination in lead. Boyega will probably go and make the lead lineup but it would be disappointing to see him get in over Michael Ward and Shaun Parkes when he delivers the weakest performance of the three leading men of the instalments. I watched Mangrove last night and this is easily one of the best things I’ve seen this year.. I’m surprised more people aren’t talking about it. Wright, Parkes, Kirby, and absolutely McQueen should be up for some major awards this year.
