I watched Mangrove last night and this is easily one of the best things I’ve seen this year.. I’m surprised more people aren’t talking about it. Wright, Parkes, Kirby, and absolutely McQueen should be up for some major awards this year.

    The Rochenda Sandall erasure…

FYC: Better Call Saul and The Good Fight in all categories including Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.

I was very impressed by her in Mangrove. She’s racking up some sublime work on screen!

Coincidentally her boyfriend (actor Mark Stanley) appears in the latest Small Axe instalment Red, White and Blue.

I actually thought she was super weak in one scene with Wright when they are outside of the main courtroom together on a bench. It felt like Sandall was really acting and trying to make the moment happen. I thought she was great elsewhere in the film, but it truly was that scene that turned me off to her performance in terms of potential awards recognition.

Hopefully after this Letitia Wright stuff the awards bodies nominate the REAL lead performance from Mangrove.

absolutely brilliant. SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!! every single “not guilty” reverberated through his body. He should absolutely be in the conservation for BA–I say this having not seen Boseman, Hopkins, Ahmed, Oldman, Yeun, etc.

Yes! I thought she was excellent in Line of Duty as well! Those who haven’t seen the show should watch it (although she doesn’t come in until the fifth season but some of the performances on the show are truly the best I’ve ever seen and it’s better than Bodyguard).

Both this scene in Line of Duty and this scene in Mangrove were excellent.

In terms of the writing Red, White and Blue is the standout for me. I see it as an interesting companion piece to this season of The Crown actually. Both set during the same time period, both talking about privilege except this one tells the story of the black working class in London. What really made me connect with the writing was how ultimately it was a father-son story and it was unlike other portrayals of father-son relationships – this one was realistic.

I also felt that the music supervision in this episode was the show’s best so far. Having How Can You Mend a Broken Heart play in the car when Leroy’s getting dropped off to the station was gut-wrenching. Other highlights in this episode were excellent including the editing (which I felt really strongly reflected the tone of the story) and the costumes (whilst I absolutely appreciate and champion the portrayal of poc working class families (especially considering the political environment in the UK where white people are increasingly being portrayed as the only working class people) it was refreshing to see for once that poc working class people were not portrayed as being “uncultured”, “drug addicted” or dressed in “rags” on television.

From a directing standpoint I still prefer Mangrove and Lovers Rock. The latter was just a euphoric cinematic experience – one that made you feel transported to this night out in North Kensington in the 80s. And the former just made you jump at every second during the montage of the police raiding the group’s houses and you really felt the pain and marginalisation of the characters through McQueen’s close-ups and how crowded and claustrophobic the scenes were (I commend McQueen on realistically portraying a protest without cheating using archive footage). The clear wigs also still bugged me.

In terms of the performances I was completely blown away by Steve Toussaint’s performance. It was utterly heartbreaking and in an ideal world he’d be getting awards recognition for this.

John Boyega on the other hand was less impressive. Out of the performances in each of the films so far I’d say he gives one of the weakest. He was more of a lead in this one than any of the “leads” in the previous instalments but he just seemed to lack expression. The “what are you a Jedi” line was nice but apart from the end scene he just felt out of character throughout the entire film. Like an inexperienced child actor delivering an “ok” performance. I preferred the whole Mangrove ensemble (including Wright to him).

    Grade: A-
    MVP: Steve Toussaint

FYC: Better Call Saul and The Good Fight in all categories including Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.

I completely agree about the brilliance of that “Broken Heart” sequence. Easily one of the best scenes in the Small Axe films so far.

Having now watched all the Small Axe films, this is how I would rank them (good to bad).

Mangrove (one of the best things I’ve watched all year)
    Education
    Alex Wheatle
Red, White and Blue (would have ranked higher if the ending was better)
    Lovers Rock

You’ve hyped me up for Education and Alex Wheatle now!

I won’t rank the films I have seen so far in terms of:

    Writing

    1. Red, White and Blue
    2. Mangrove
    3. Lovers Rock

    Directing

    1. Lovers Rock
    2. Mangrove
    3. Red, White and Blue

    Lead Performance

    1. Mangrove (I’m not talking about fake lead Letitia Wright here)
    2. Lovers Rock
    3. Red, White and Blue

I am quite excited for Education. Although it’s a subject that really hits close to home for me so I’m not sure how much I’ll be able to take it but I am glad McQueen isn’t leaving the institutional racism in the British education system untouched. It’s about time someone talks about that.

In that case, I reckon you’ll enjoy Education more than the Alex one.

The way critics are really trying to claim this as a film 💀 I mean I know film is empty this year but come on. It’s literally an anthology series, and all five parts work in cohesion to form a whole.

On another note, this clearly has buzz and should make the globes (in the right TV category). To be honest, it could be the alternative pick to The Queen’s Gambit.

I’m starting to think this too.

Not sure about the US but the show has been building a lot of buzz here with each episode and I haven’t seen anyone in the industry here who I know or network with not at least mention this show. Red, White and Blue and Education seem to have had the most buzz here.

With the HFPA’s bias for Amazon and the fact that this will get a bigger campaign because of Maisel’s absence it could be the spoiler. I thought I May Destroy You might be able to but sadly I am losing confidence in the HFPA being cool enough to award one of the most original high quality shows created on the face of the earth.

And they didn’t even nominate any of the actors from the films apart from Wright! If you’re going to fraud it in film critics awards at least do it right.
