This is the first year that nominations for “Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics” (the Emmy equivalent of the Oscars’ better-named Best Original Song) will spawn from a popular vote of the entire music branch instead of being the averaged results of ratings assigned to songs by panelists. This is bad news for smaller shows, but good news for the predictions game because we will be seeing a public ballot online for the first time and they will probably just vote for songs that we know and not snub hits out of nowhere. This happened to be a big year for songs that somewhat penetrated the zeitgeist (as much as they can for television). Pre-ballot contenders:
– American Dad!: “I’m a Virgin” (Abel Tesfaye, Asa Taccone)
Reply
– Big Mouth: “Anything Goes in Florida” (Mark Rivers)

ReplyCopy URLMay 22, 2020 at 12:01 am #1203494828I’ve been listening to some of these songs again on Spotify. and a small touch I really love is that they credit the characters as the singers, so for “L to the OG” they list Nicholas Britell and Kendall Roy. For the Righteous Gemstones, their song “Misbehavin” Which is perfect for the show btw, lists the singers as Aimee-Leigh and Baby Billy. And the Black Mirror song credits the singer for “On a Roll” as Ashley O. Doesn’t mean anything for the race obviously but just a small touch I really love.

ReplyCopy URLMay 22, 2020 at 1:10 am #1203494894Are the Rusical productions from Drag Race considered original songs? Given it’s now a popular vote any of four Rusical numbers being nominated wouldn’t be surprising.
“I’m that Bitch”

May 22, 2020 at 4:03 am #1203494986Sack Lunch Bunch will likely do well, but “Anything Goes in Florida” should win, though they certainly couldn’t play any of it on the telecast, lol.

I know it’s supposed to be intentionally bad and cringeworthy, but I can’t stop myself from loving it.
