Episode 7 was a masterpiece of directing and writing. Nabhaan Rizwan was win worthy in this. I can’t wait to see more of his work. Hypnotic presence on screen, very similar style to Riz Ahmed.
This really is THE ensemble of the year and nothing comes close. It gives everybody something to do and every character plays a pivot role in the story, even though Mackenzie Davis plays the main character (and she’s not in every episode). Himesh Patel, Nabhaan Rizwan, Matilda Lawler, Danielle Deadwyler, Gael Garcia Bernal, Caitlin Fitzgerald, David Wilmot, Lori Petty, David Cross, etc, Timothy Simons is not even 20 minutes in it and he gives a very remarkable performance.
Technically speaking, it’s a beautiful looking show. The cinematography and production design is just masterfully crafted, especially when you have to state a different visual style for the past and present scenes. Dan Romer’s score is also moving.
Still three episodes left, since HBO Max is 1 week late in my country. TV does not get better than this.

This tweet went semi viral. People seem to be catching up with the show, despite HBO Max not giving a shit about promoting it.
If this was on Netflix it would’ve been trending and it would be a hit. They really do know how to promote their products. Yellowjackets also outshadowed its buzz.
I get that not everybody (it’s a love or hate show) will feel this way, but I’ve fallen in love with this show and the characters. It’s straight up beautiful, cathartic and moving, and it goes against the nihilism and lack of emotion we see in most TV shows nowadays (ex: Game of Thrones, Succession, Squid Game, The Boys). It reminds me of Lost.
Somerville is just a genius. The guy worked in The Leftovers, then Maniac and now Station Eleven. I can’t wait for him to have his own awards juggernaut.

She crafted such a complex character in just a single episode, and made some very interesting and unexpected acting choices. I recognise her from Watchmen, where she also leaves a big impression despite small screen time.

ReplyCopy URLJanuary 19, 2022 at 4:41 pm #1204739193The ending of episode 5 was wild. The big reveal is handled very well, with particular credit going to the editing. David Wilmot is excellent here – he gets to play so many different shades of the character as time develops through the episode. Caitlin FitzGerald (who I love in Succession and UnREAL) is a magnetic presence on screen, but I wish they used a different take for her climactic crying scene. I didn’t buy the emotion.

January 19, 2022 at 5:59 pm #1204739297The Tyler Perry impact strikes again. Many actors from his shows go on to bigger things. Danielle was on The Haves and Have Nots. Her character was a mess. But she has truly been a revelation on this show.

ReplyCopy URLJanuary 19, 2022 at 7:50 pm #1204739390Episode 9 is basically The Revenant meets Pieces of a Woman and it’s one of the most beautifully directed episodes I’ve seen in a while.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 20, 2022 at 4:57 pm #1204740944I only have the finale to go now. Himesh Patel has been excellent in the back half of the season. This is comfortably the best performance of his career. Episodes 7 and 9 were directorial feats, but to be honest every director on the show has delivered at least nomination-worthy work. Ready for my mind to be blown by ‘Unbroken Circle’.

January 20, 2022 at 7:14 pm #1204741125Is it insane that in a cast of excellent performances (Danielle Deadwyler having the best episodic one but still only having the one episode) I think my favorite performance was Matilda Lawler

ReplyCopy URLJanuary 21, 2022 at 9:55 am #1204742077Deborah Cox (who I’m happy to confirm still has an incredible voice) singing Midnight Train to Georgia, followed by the epic and beautiful reunion, has to be the best TV scene of the year. Or was the Hamlet scene preceding it even better? Honestly the whole finale was incredible. This show is the best I’ve seen of the TV season so far. Heartfelt and nuanced work from all involved.

January 22, 2022 at 7:29 pm #1204744443Ranking the performances from the show:
1- Danielle Deadwyler
2- Matilda Lawler
3- Himesh Patel
4- David Wilmot
5- Mackenzie Davis
6- Nabhaan Rizwan
7- Lori Petty
8- Caitlin Fitzgerald
9- Gael Garcia Bernal
10- Daniel Zovatto
11- Philippine VelgeVelge and Zovatto were the only weak links of the cast for me. Velge didn’t seem suited for the age her character was supposed to be and Zovatto had good moments (like the play) but overall I thought he couldn’t get into the spirit of the show. Even then they objectively did what they to do.
There was also some excellent “guest” appearences like Timothy Simons, David Cross and Tara Nicodemo.
Best ensemble of a TV show in 2021, hands down.
