It was a good episode. Intense and engaging. The cast remains great, with Snook and Cox being the obvious standouts as always.  There does seem to be an occasional self-consciousness in the writing that I don’t think existed before. But I guess that sort of thing becomes inevitable with anything with this much fan fervour. Hopefully it eases back into its old self with the coming episodes.

I also do think Succession is at a point where it needs to offer us something more than a simple corporate game of thrones, if I may put it that way. It has been excellent in the past exploring this aspect but it can’t stay stuck there forever, rehashing the same general ideas. There’s much more to mine with this setting and these characters. Nonetheless, I look forward to what lies ahead.

If Brian Cox doesn’t win the Emmy this time then what is even the point ? He is a genius. He can transmit a bunch of emotions with only a look and a smirk, you never know what the hell is Logan thinking and this is what makes this character so fascinating.

I think it’s hilarious that all his children are incompetent and he absolutely knows that they are going to destroy the company if any of them takes on as a CEO. Roman is talented but he only cares about having fun (losing the chance of being CEO just to please Gerri). Ken is a time bomb, he is the most similar to Logan in what comes to humor changes. Shiv is arrogant and this will bring her down.

And it was really interesting how the dynamic between Tom and Shiv changed here. He didn’t say “I love you” back and he didn’t try to pitch her for Logan when he asked what he was thinking.

I just wish Karolina and Jess were in the show more. Shiv is basically the only well written regular female character (Rhea excluded), all the other ones are basically stereotypes or comic relief (Tabitha, Marcia, Willa and Rava have no depth). Gerri is still a very underdeveloped character. I believe this is my major problem with the show.

Also, I think Naomi will just make things worse for Kendall. He keeps saying that she’s good for him, but this is a different Kendall than the one from Season 2. She’s an agent of chaos and Kendall is back to being himself.

I foresee Kendall forgetting about some important meeting because of a night of cocaine with Naomi.

Okay but Rava in this episode was great. Her increasing frustration with Kendall’s shenanigans was palpable. And Kendall’s characterization in this episode once again reinforces the whole “no good guy” thing that’s been at the core of this show from the start, I don’t find myself rooting for either Kendall or Logan in this fight. My only problem with this episode was a distinct lack of Stewy.

That scene with Roman propositioning Gerri in the hotel room is imprinted on my brain. Also, the way I burst out laughing when Roman calls Logan to pitch himself, and the first thing Logan says after ending the call is “Roman’s out”. This show makes me howl.

As I said, I think it was intentional. He knew what was going to happen. Roman was pitching Gerri to be the CEO.

I don’t know if I’ve posted my reaction to the premiere yet, but it was basically a perfect episode of TV. What a way to start off the season.

The whole cast was brilliant, per usual. The show also continues to be 100x funnier than most comedies on TV right now.

I still cannot stand Kendall though. It blows my mind that he’s most people’s favorite. Shiv looks like she’s going to have a great arc this season, potentially flipping back and forth between Kendall and Logan. Plus dealing with her complicated marriage to Tom. Gerri, too! Love that her role already seems bigger than last seasons. Smith-Cameron is definitely getting nominated next year.

I can’t wait for next week’s episode. This show, and especially the writing, is just head and shoulders above everything else. It’s in a league of its own, when talking about other shows that are on TV right now.
