Not to mention Lawrence has stated (initially, at least) that it’s a three year plan. I listened to Goldstein on the Indiewire podcast a few days back and he basically said people think we’ve changed the plan but we haven’t.

    They should do 4
3 seasons is a weird number for comedy series.

If it is the final season would Apple really want to air in the early Summer of next year? That wouldn’t be helpful for its chances in 2023.

Maybe not but it’s also their most popular show, not just their most award-y.

(I also feel like Ted Lasso is 100% the type of show where you could pretty easily conceive of a spinoff, though. You could easily construct a show around Rebecca or do a show with Keeley and Roy as newly weds or send Ted to take over another sport or football code or…something)

(These are probably terrible ideas and why I’m not in the pitching TV shows business)

I think what really makes a spin off of a show great is when you zone in on a “smaller interesting character” and really re-focus the show around their character’s tone. This is something Better Call Saul, FrasierThe Good Fight etc did well.

There is potential for a Rebecca based spin off or a Keeley and Roy one but the problem here is that part of the charm with each of those characters (whilst they obviously have their own independent sub-plots) is that they work well off of each other. So if you pull one out all the jenga bricks fall on you. This is something I’d actually argue is why that Friends spin-off flopped.

Oh, I 100% agree. Like I said, this is why I don’t come up with spin-offs.

(I also completely don’t get the prequel trend without linking characters. Thrones spends a decade developing dozens of characters only to do a prequel with zero crossover? Meh. I don’t like dragons that much. Someone must)

Is Ed Asner going to be in Cobra Kai season 4 (I know he was in season 3 although I don’t watch the show)? I can see him get a posthumous nom.

No idea, but he is eligible for Grace and Frankie and Central Perk (voiceover) in this round already. He may well be in more eps of Grace and Frankie but they’ve only dropped four so far.

Given it will be a brutally competitive year for Fonda and Tomlin, Asner would be a really nice final season nomination for them

I find that particularly hard to happen.. this is a weaker awards season for Comedy and Shue couldn’t get a nomination

Elizabeth Shue didn’t have as much of a narrative though. Sure the field will be more competitive but being in a weaker show didn’t stop someone like Carrie Fisher getting a posthumous nomination for a previously nominated program so maybe the same happens here? Idk.
