June 15, 2022 at 9:55 am #1204984208This is a very tough date scheduling wise, however, I do think they might benefit from being in the Winter race. It means they’re the first show (I believe) off the rank with returning (actress) nominees. That period is a glut of fantasy shows and that’s not for everyone so it gives people an alternative.
Hmm I disagree that being a part of the winter awards is something that is advantageous for The Handmaid’s Tale. I think with shows like it that at this point in their runs are only drifting further and further out of the awards conversation (Stranger Things is another one that comes to mind), the more they stand out the stronger their chances are. Even if both House of the Dragon and The Lord of the Rings flop the landscape will be so inundated with prestige dramas with more of a shine (both Yellows being two prominent examples, arguably The Boys too) that I think the show risks getting lost in the shuffle by releasing in the Autumn.
If this season is decently received it will probably hold on to its SAG and WGA nominations but I think doing any better than it did when it competed at the winter awards in 2019 is going to be a hurdle with the show already starting off below The Crown and Ozark from the last time it competed against both of them and Severance also probably starting off ahead of it due to having much stronger overall industry and critical momentum.
FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.
June 15, 2022 at 10:08 am #1204984230The Handmaid’s Tale is at the point in its run where it’s Emmys chances are heavily dependent on how competitive the drama categories are. If it’s wide open like the last time it competed, voters will resort back to it being that it’s a show they once fully embraced. However, it’s not necessarily a show that inspires much passion nowadays, so it can easily be booted out by newer shows + shows in the prime of their run.
I’m sure viewership will continue to be good but we’ll need to see if the season is good enough to have lasting power. I personally think they’re better off releasing it around January/February, but that’s just me. It’s days of winning anything are definitely over though, that’s for sure.
