i’ve mostly seen talk of stranger things still. interesting to see what categories the million minute duo of episodes get into.
June 25, 2022 at 2:42 pm #1204996207I really gotta catch up on this season of The Boys. It’s a show that I enjoy but don’t care to seek out for some reason so it always gets ahead of me. But I gotta see what all the fuss is about this latest episode that everyone is going about.
June 25, 2022 at 4:12 pm #1204996290The Boys has really broken into mainstream this year. I originally thought it would get lost among the other genre shows but maybe it pulls through. We have to see how it does during winter, tho.
June 25, 2022 at 5:18 pm #1204996309It’s surprising that the Globes have never touched The Boys, they adore Amazon shows and it’s been their #1 drama (and sometimes only viable contender) for years now.

It’s weird because on 2021 The Boys was already big but the Globes went with Hunters/Al Pacino instead
FYC:
All things Succession, Severance, Ted Lasso, The Great and The White Lotus! Also, Colin Firth and Janelle James while you're at it.
June 25, 2022 at 5:47 pm #1204996320And it was a zoom ceremony as well, so there wasn’t even a legitimate reason for Pacino to be your HFPA typical starfucking nom if he can’t even be at your party.
June 25, 2022 at 7:36 pm #1204996374The Boys gang rise omg it’s coming this season!
June 25, 2022 at 9:04 pm #1204996399I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve mostly been lukewarm about The Boys. I think it’s just a little too pulpy for me at times. Also, I am generally just not a fan of the superhero genre and I recognize this kind of subverts the standard in a lot of ways. But superpower logic always frustrates to enough extent that it often detaches me from what is admittedly still good storytelling. It’s like I am too neurotic to not let it bother just enough to prevent any genuine investment the way others do.
That said, that episode would rival anything from this Emmy cycle – Severance, Succession, Barry, Station Eleven, whatever. And I went into it almost cynically because it’s been everywhere I go for the most part. Twitter is mostly the Roe v. Wade stuff. But reddit is a ton of this episode (and also Roe v. Wade stuff) and here is also quite vocal about it.
The performances throughout the episode were fucking phenomenal. It was funny without winking or trying too hard. And Anthony Starr gave me Bryan Cranston vibes in that mirror scene. And the ending was perfect. I thought season 2 getting into series was possibly a fluke. I won’t be saying it this time around.

Much like The Mandalorian, most of the other award bodies probably needed the stamp of approval from the Emmys before nominating the genre show that doesn’t scream prestige. The Globes are also more resistant to genre stuff seeing the zero wins for Thrones, passing over Stranger Things for The Crown or even snubbing Watchmen (with other reasons in play as well).
The competition will be tough in winter but The Boys stands a better shot this time, being an Emmy nominee and a legitimate hit.

I think a factor for The Boys and Starr is that that glut of new genre shows (five I think in August – September?) split the difference in terms of viewers and none of them becomes an enormous breakout Season 1 critical hit. Then The Boys comes in with the strength of being a returning nominee into winter.
June 26, 2022 at 7:21 am #1204996582Re: Westworld, I’m glad the reviews are at least reasonable, but HBO is still more or less shading/dumping it, which is concerning for a contender that was already sliding.
I think the problem for me with it is that I’m not sure if many people are even going to watch this season even if it is a return to form. The Guardian the other day just joked that there are only 7 people still watching the show because of how much it’s fallen out of the zeitgeist.
I guess it could get DeBose and Marsden in though if they’re guest eligible.

I read somewhere that filming is planned to end in December. Last season ended its filming in August and premiered in October. Succession is coming for that Spring slot.
