April 18, 2022 at 7:20 pm #1204922751Quinta totally deserves the win, but I’ll be heartbroken to see Pamela Adlon go zero for five here. Directing herself for every single episode of four seasons is a stunning achievement on its own, and it’s even more impressive that the show has stayed so phenomenally good for that long. Better Things is criminally underrated, and if anyone was going to award Adlon for being a creative force of nature, it’d be here, but alas.

The only one I can think of is Hader. He has never won before, this season is getting better reviews and he has kind of narrative as Creator/Producer/Writer/Director/Actor of the show. Maybe Barry could even win Achievement in a Comedy Series.

!
It would be such a shame. She is doing a remarkable work in this beautiful final season, this weeek episode was just incredible and I hope at least TCA recognize Better Things.
ReplyCopy URLApril 21, 2022 at 12:50 pm #1204926173I think we need to watch out for Hannah Einbinder snagging a nomination. TCA has really liked to nominate young women lately: Elle Fanning, Kaitlyn Dever, Anya Taylor-Joy

April 22, 2022 at 6:07 pm #1204928069Not that it necessarily means too much but it’s interesting how few limited series there are with 80+ metacritic scores here compared to the comedy and drama series this season thus far:
Comedy
1. What We Do in the Shadows – 96

April 22, 2022 at 6:17 pm #1204928077The ironic thing about limited series becoming so highly populated by prestige names and content is that it seems critics are less forgiving on them now.

April 22, 2022 at 6:32 pm #1204928092On the one hand I do feel like critics have been a bit harsh to some of these limited series (Dopesick, Scenes From a Marriage and A Very British Scandal, although not exactly exemplary pieces of television are imo better than their metacritic scores) but on the other I really do understand why we’ve had so few limited contenders receiving strong critical receptions this season. Aside from Maid, Station Eleven and The White Lotus, none of the shows that have aired so far are particularly innovative or are groundbreaking in their use of the long form format. Most of them (especially the true crime series) in spite of having exemplary central performances are just one and a half hour Oscar bait dramas stretched over ten hours.
Time will tell how well shows like The Dropout, Pam and Tommy and WeCrashed age on their own but I have a feeling aside from their subject matters and their standout central performances when discussing their leads’ filmography, there’ll just go the same way as shows like Fosse/Verdon and Little Fires Everywhere and be forgotten by the time the next Emmys come around.

I’ll never forget Ricky Gervais at the Golden Globes making fun of this movie for being nominated and asking Johnny Depp if he actually saw the movie.
ReplyCopy URLApril 22, 2022 at 9:09 pm #1204928209I should take that as a warning that next time a project with the words ‘The’ and ‘Tourist’ in its title is on to skip it because both the film The Tourist and the show were so underwhelming (well aside from Danielle Macdonald’s performance which actually was quite good).

April 23, 2022 at 8:08 am #1204928748“Rothaniel” has gotten a few good industry write ups within the last few days (kinda surprising since it’s three weeks old now). Wonder if it/Carmichael could pop in the Mini-Movie-Special and Indvidual Comedy categories like Burnham’s “Inside” did last year.

Haven’t seen it yet but several people have raved about it to me. Definitely seems to be building steam.
