Gay people finally exist in this show
March 29, 2023 at 10:18 am #1205368087I think episode 3 fell between the first two episodes at about an 8 level. Goldstein and Waddingham continue to tower above the rest but Sudeikis had some better moments than recently. It was just a bit up and down

yep so far this season she has had nothing to work with

Same with Toheeb Jimoh unfortunately.. hopefully that changes.

I haven’t watched the episode yet but based on what I’ve read it sounds like they’re finally confirming Colin is gay? They’ve been making little throwaway jokes about it, like I remember one episode he was the only one who knew what Grindr was, but that’s the most they’ve ever addressed even the existence or possibility of queerness, and it’s always felt pretty shallow (also inaccurate, every straight guy I know knows what Grindr is, I honestly feel like anyone remotely engaged with the world has at least heard of it).
Point is if it’s true that they were just slowly laying the groundwork for an actual storyline, than it’ll retroactively make those jokes a lot less annoying lol. Glad they’re finally addressing it (if true).
March 29, 2023 at 1:51 pm #1205368400I want a Phil Dunster nom before this show bows out. He’s the only Supporting Actor who’s been great in all three seasons so far and yet somehow the only one without a nom.

I fear he may be the Courteney Cox of Ted Lasso- the only regular never nominated. Him having lots of screen time with Brett Goldstein may help give him his best push yet for a nomination- especially this year those two are most consistently bringing the comedy and fun when the show goes to dramatic or drags under the weight of too many stories and characters.
Agreed on poor Juno Temple getting the shaft so far. An victim of the trope “break a couple up and isolate one of them” – and she got stuck with an uninteresting office plot with annoying new friend to give her something to do.
March 30, 2023 at 7:35 pm #1205369983Does anyone have a read on the buzz and general reception for this new season of Ted Lasso? Feels quieter than usual to me but I can’t tell if that’s just me and my social media bubble or something else…
I think Apple has definitely gone out of its way with a ton of promotions and I did see the news with the White House visit but the episodes feel less discussed than ever before.
I’m also personally enjoying the season a bit but not really as much as I have before, and something feels slightly off with the writing that is just not working for me as well as it did in previous seasons. The actors are certainly still on their A-game though.
March 30, 2023 at 7:53 pm #1205369991The buzz is definitely a bit muted imo (I think it’s because we’re kind of out of the pandemic now and there’s multiple big shows on atm) but part of me is fine with it because when s2 was airing EVERYONE was talking about it and the discourse was really annoying..

Apparently viewership is up a little according to Samba, but we won’t get a good idea until when it hits Nielsen in a fortnight. In terms of “research” engagement (which is something you see some analysts use and is pretty easy to look at for a layman) – Google search is down, Wikipedia and IMDB search are more or less flat. So on balance, I’d probably call that flat.
March 30, 2023 at 9:06 pm #1205370066Personally speaking although I did really enjoy the first episode and wanted to see more of the show after it I just haven’t really had the opportunity to catch any of the episodes. I also think I’m personally less motivated to catch them as they go out compared to say Succession and Yellowjackets because I’m less worried about getting spoiled on it than I am with them (I wonder if that’s a similar case with other people and that’s why the buzz has been a bit muted).
Solidarity with the striking writers. Pay them the wages they are owed for bringing us the content we are all on here because of!

I don’t know that I care about being spoiled except for really the finale
April 1, 2023 at 12:42 pm #1205373549I’ve liked the first three episodes of the new season well enough, but the whole affair can’t help but feel pretty haphazardly put together.
I was originally annoyed by Zava when he first showed up (especially when I realized he’d be a recurring character), but now that the pieces of character development are falling into place between Roy and Jamie, I’m seeing where it’s going.
Cannot stand the Nate/Rupert stuff. The “evil lair” West Ham setup is such a corny, obvious play on Star Wars, and between the costumes and the production design, it’s just sooo over the top. Feels almost like Disney Channel.
Bummer that they obviously don’t know what to do with Keeley or Sam anymore, especially with how good Jimoh and Temple are. I do like how they’ve been integrating Sharon, though. Just the right amount for that character.
This Colin storyline is intriguing, need to see where it goes, but I was definitely not expecting it to be set up for what seems to be a significant multi-episode arc (but I’m not complaining because it has much more potential than the majority of the storylines LOL). Though I highly, highly doubt this was the plan for him all along; almost certain that the creators saw the fan theories online and saw an opportunity for an interesting story. Nothing wrong with that, but I think citing a throwaway joke in season 2 as part of a master plan is giving the writers too much credit.
Other than the Nate stuff, I wouldn’t say there’s much this season that’s actively bad, but there’s just a big lack of focus. The end of episode 3 was when I really felt like the overall trajectory of the season came into focus, but with how long the episodes are now, three hours is too long for that to happen.
FYC: Bad Sisters (Anne-Marie Duff) Cunk on Earth (Diane Morgan), Fleishman Is in Trouble (Lizzy Caplan/Claire Danes), Industry (Marisa Abela/Myha'la Herrold), Physical (Rose Byrne), Poker Face (Ellen Barkin/Joseph Gordon-Levitt/Chloë Sevigny), The White Lotus (Sabrina Impacciatore)
April 6, 2023 at 3:52 pm #1205380670The big problem with Ted Lasso season 2 was that it realised it could have a dramatic episode or two and deliver something really strong and then decided to make half of the season dramatic and as a result manipulative. Thankfully in these four episodes that issue seems to have disappeared and the show has returned towards being a show that I at the very least can feel happy watching.
However at the same time these bloated run times are really constraining the show. Part of the show’s charm (in both its prior seasons) was its ability to develop the world it has with the simplicity of half an hour which has kind of been lost in a lot of American sitcoms nowadays. But by making all the episodes 45 minutes to an hour long, the show has no choice to adapt its format and become something else entirely. Just like Stranger Things at times stopped feeling like it was even television in its fourth season, it feels like the show has stopped being a comedy and now become a light soap with comedic elements. It was fine having an hour long premiere to re-introduce the show but there’s no reason to have these lengthy episodes for this kind of show, especially when you’re just using it for filler storylines that one can do without instead of progressing the plot any further (Nate had to be absent, in spite of being the season’s angagonist from two episodes because?)
The cast remains very good and Hannah Waddingham in particular has been outstanding this season. If she continues on this roll she might actually upend Sheryl Lee Ralph as my current personal awards frontrunner. I’m actually enjoying Juno Temple this season too. Her storyline isn’t anything special but I don’t really mind it either way which could be just because of how well-worn her characterisation is. It’s disappointing Toheeb Jimoh has essentially become furniture when there was so much potential for future storylines for him from the end of season 2.
Ultimately I’m not feeling as strongly against this season as I did for season 2 but I’m also not feeling as enthusiastic as I did about season 1 and yearn for where it could be right now if it had a better start. It actually makes a bit of a sense to me after catching up with the season why the buzz has been so muted because whilst I’m not feeling particularly negative about the season so far, even after catching up on it I don’t feel the urgency to watch the episodes as soon as they drop (which is something I felt with both seasons 1 and 2, for very different reasons).
