I agree. The field is incredibly barren and the guild tends to be more discerning (i.e. they don’t automatically default to a low tier Emmy contender).
Handmaid’s, Pose and Succession all are in. The last two spots will either go to The Good Fight/Evil or something like Yellowjackets.
FYC:
"The Good Fight", "The Other Two" and "Station Eleven" in all categories, Sarah Lancashire ("Julia"), William Jackson Harper ("Love Life") and Luke Kirby ("The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel")

Hihi I’ve been saying this since Day 1, glad y’all thinking that too!
It's about the chaotic editing in Moulin Rouge!

January 8, 2022 at 7:27 am #1204704759Dopesick could get multiple DGA noms. Barry Levinson directed the pilot and they could namecheck him. And Danny Strong could get in for the finale.
USC Scripter predictions (not a guild, but…)
Dopesick – Danny Strong, based on nonfiction book Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors and the Drug Company that Addicted America by Beth Macy
Maid – Molly Smith Metzler, based on the memoir Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will to Survive, by Stephanie Land
Station Eleven – Patrick Somerville, based on the novel Station Eleven, by Emily St John Mandel
The Underground Railroad – Barry Jenkins, based on the novel he Underground Railroad, by Colson Whitehead
Felling good about these four because of their subject matter that appeal to academics + relatively successful books.
The fifth slot is open wide. I don’t think Scenes From a Marriage is eligible since it’s not based on a book, but I guess they could say that it’s based on the script by Ingmar Bergman. The Wheel of Time and Brand New Cherry Flavor are possible. The former because of Robert Jordan and the latter because of its writers friendly nature.
Does anyone know more TV shows based on books released this cycle ? I recall A Very English Scandal was based on one (and won USC Scripter), but I don’t know if the sequel is also adapted from a book.
January 8, 2022 at 7:48 am #1204704786Well I assume A Very British Scandal would be ineligible for the scripter regardless because it hasn’t been released in the US yet.
I have Foundation in the 5th slot for the scripter.
FYC:
"The Good Fight", "The Other Two" and "Station Eleven" in all categories, Sarah Lancashire ("Julia"), William Jackson Harper ("Love Life") and Luke Kirby ("The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel")

Yeah, this is a solid pick. Such a hard thing to adapt, and whilst not perfect, it’s hard to not admire what they’re doing on a certain level.
Other things that come to mind are The North Water, The Pursuit of Love (both which may not have had enough US visibility) and Sweet Tooth.

January 11, 2022 at 11:37 am #1204715617This is Us got its first ever noms here so must have some renewed buzz in the industry because of the final season I think. It only ever showed up with the Emmys before.
THT missed for the first time here and after getting nominated at the Emmys last year so not a good sign for what was perceived to be a rebound.
Emily in Paris is also making gains as it wasn’t nominated here last time. Just shows how a stamp of approval from the Emmys will make the guilds embrace shows that aren’t typically seen as awards stuff or having enough prestige. Same thing happened with the The Mandalorian on some level.
The list being largely dominated by shows from the first half of the year also shows how relatively weak our current Emmy contenders are.
January 11, 2022 at 11:39 am #1204715621I honestly can’t believe Mare of Easttown is getting all these BTL nominations at the guilds and Emmys and none of them are for its score (especially when this scene exists!) It was one of my favourite parts of the show! The score felt so cathartic and raw and really fit in with each of the tonal shifts the show made.
